TYLER -- The UT Tyler women’s soccer team defeated Texas College,
2-0, Sunday afternoon at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.
The win marks the first victory of the year for the Patriots, who are now 1-1 after a
season opening loss to Fredonia State on Friday night.
The game stayed scoreless through the first half despite the
Patriots out-shooting the Lady Steers, 16-1, forcing TC goalkeeper
Diana Martinez to record five saves in the first half.
The Patriots came out attacking early in the second half,
putting constant pressure on Martinez and the Texas College defense. At the 76:16 mark, UT Tyler finally got on the board with their first goal of the
season scored by Cristina Mendoza with the assist credited to Kristen Steele.
Charity Shipman then scored an unassisted goal at the 86:20
mark to push the Patriot’s lead to 2-0, as Shipman and the Patriot’s defense
proved to be enough in the shut out.
UT Tyler out-shot Texas College, 9-3 in the second half,
and 25-4 overall.
The Patriots now hit the road to
take on Southwestern in Georgetown Friday before heading to San Antonio to
meet Trinity on Sunday.
