NCAAs: UT Tyler to Host Oglethorpe Thursday

The UT Tyler Patriots defeated Oglethorpe, 3-0, in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Men's Soccer Championships on Thursday ni Tyler. The Patriots now advance to the second round and will meet Trinity at 1 p.m. Sunday in San Antonio.

TYLER -- The UT Tyler men’s soccer team will host Oglethorpe on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex in the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championships.

The NCAA Men’s Soccer National Committee released the official tournament bracket and notified host sites on Monday.

Head Coach Kenny Jones and the Patriots (15-2-2) earned the American Southwest Conference's automatic bid to the national tournament by defeating the Hardin-Simmons, 3-0, on Sunday in the conference championship. UT Tyler is making its third trip to the NCAA tournament.

Oglethorpe, located in Atlanta, Ga., is making its first national tournament appearance after defeating Centre College in the championship match of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament. The Petrels, coached by Jon Akin, come in with a 17-3 record. Admission charges are $6 for adults and $4 for seniors and students.

The winner of Thursday's match will face Trinity (Tex.) on Sunday at in San Antonio.

A total of 61 teams were selected for the championship field; the national semifinals and title match are set for Dec. 2-3 at Blossom Soccer Stadium, also in San Antonio.
