PORTALES, N.M. – The UT Tyler women's soccer team weathered an early storm, both literally and figuratively, but a pair of late goals from Eastern New Mexico lifted the Greyhounds past the visiting Patriots, 2-1, Thursday night.
Â
Despite facing the uphill side of a 17-10 margin in total shots, Patriot goalkeepers
Camri Cecil and
Maya Dossing combined for 10 saves to help keep UT Tyler within reach. With the loss, UT Tyler drops to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in Lone Star Conference play, while Eastern New Mexico improves to 4-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the LSC.
Â
How It Happened: The start of the game was delayed 90 minutes by thunderstorms in the area, and when UT Tyler's first Lone Star Conference road game finally got underway, the Greyhounds produced a 9-1 first-half shots advantage. The Patriots balanced things out in the second half, out-shooting ENMU by a 9-8 margin and breaking the scoreless tie on an own goal with just 15 minutes to play.Â
Â
Danielle Lacasse's long free kick from in front of the Patriots' bench found the head of
Gabi Garcia, who flicked it towards the far post where a defender tried to clear it from danger. Â Instead, the failed clearance found the back of the net, giving UT Tyler a 1-0 lead.
Â
However, Eastern New Mexico tied the game in the 83
rd minute when Caitlyn Schmidt split the Patriots defense for a clean shot in the box that found the back of the net, and Desiree Morgas placed a 20-yard free kick just inside the left post for the game-winner in the 89
th minute.
Â
By The Numbers: UT Tyler generated a 7-3 edge in corner kicks and posted a 9-8 margin in second-half shots…
Camri Cecil secured seven saves in the first half alone, her fourth time in seven games with at least seven saves…
Korey Cyr and
Kiersten Ehler each produced three shots (two on goal).
Â
What's Next: UT Tyler's first Lone Star Conference road trip continues just across the New Mexico/Texas border on Saturday, Oct. 5, when the Patriots visit West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas.
