SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- St. Mary's clinched its first Lone Star Conference championship Thursday night, as the NCAA Division II No. 11-ranked Rattlers rolled to a 5-1 win over UT Tyler.
St. Mary's put three goals into the net in the first half for a 3-0 halftime lead, adding two more within the first 11 minutes of the second half from Edu Toiny-Pendred before Steven Chavez scored the lone UT Tyler goal in the 67th minute.
UT Tyler falls to 6-7-4 overall and 1-5-3 in the Lone Star Conference, while St. Mary's improves to 13-2-2 overall and 8-1-1 in conference play. The Rattlers concluded the regular season with Thursday's win, finishing the season with 25 points in conference play to clinch the regular-season conference title.
How It Happened: St. Mary's compiled a 12-2 shots advantage in the first half alone, and three different players converted for goals for the Rattlers in the opening half. Ollie Wright assisted the first two goals which came less than three minutes apart, setting up a 2-0 lead with assists on scores from Carlos Blasco (15th minute) and Martin Ibarreche (18th minute).
Nenad Markovic added a 28th-minute goal to extend the lead to 3-0, and Edu Toiny-Pendred needed just four minutes to find the back of the net for his first of two second-half goals. He tracked down an errant pass near the end line for a difficult shot at a narrow angle at the near post for his second goal in the 56th minute.
Steven Chavez ruined the Rattlers' shutout bid in the 67th minute, tackling the ball away from a Rattlers defender and taking on a pair of defenders for a 23-yard shot to the right side which glanced off the right post and into the net to cut the lead to 5-1.
By The Numbers: St. Mary's finished the game with a shots margin of 22-8… The Rattlers also generated a 7-3 edge in corner kicks… Carlos Medina was the Patriots' only player with more than one shot, providing two shots (one on goal) off the bench… Steven Chavez became UT Tyler's season scoring leader with his fourth goal of the campaign.
What's Next: The 2019 season comes to an end Saturday at 2:30 p.m., when UT Tyler hosts No. 20-ranked Texas A&M International.
