WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Kaycee West answered a Midwestern State goal late in the second half, sending the game to overtime with an 81st-minute equalizer as UT Tyler registered a 1-1 draw on the road to wrap up the 2019 season.
The Patriots, who took a three-game winning streak into the regular-season finale, finished the program's first season of NCAA Division II and Lone Star Conference competition on a four-game unbeaten streak.
With the draw, UT Tyler concludes the campaign at 6-10-1 overall and 4-8-1 in Lone Star Conference play. The draw secured the Patriots' finish in ninth place in the 14-team Lone Star Conference women's soccer standings. Midwestern State finishes the season 4-12-2 overall and 3-9-1 in LSC play.
How It Happened: Although the teams combined for 39 shots, it took until the 13th shot for each team to put the ball in the back of the net. Midwestern State struck first when Senna Garcia scored in the 75th minute to break a scoreless tie.
Just six minutes later, Kaycee West answered with the tying goal in the 81st minute, scoring her team-high fifth goal of the season with an assist from Mariah Harmon. Midwestern State had four shots and a pair of corner kicks in the final eight minutes of regulation, but Patriots goalkeeper Camri Cecil made a pair of saves during that time while the two other shots were wide of the goal to send the game to overtime tied at 1-1.
The Mustangs controlled the play in the first 10-minute overtime, taking both shots in the period, but UT Tyler produced three shots to the Mustangs' two in the second overtime as both teams pressed for the game-winner..
By The Numbers: Midwestern State finished with a 22-17 edge in total shots, putting 10 shots on goal while UT Tyler produced 6 shots on goal… Sophomore goalkeeper Camri Cecil finished with a season-high 9 saves… Kaycee West scored four of her five goals this season during Lone Star Conference play, including three goals in the final three games of the season… West took a game-high six shots, while nine other Patriots registered at least one shot… UT Tyler's shutout streak ran to 353 consecutive scoreless minutes until Garcia scored in the 75th minute of the contest… The Patriots averaged 17 shots per game over the final five games of the season.
