CANYON, Texas -- UT Tyler came home with a split of its final Lone Star Conference weekend road trip, falling in three sets (25-15, 25-23, 25-19) to West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon a day after the Patriots posted a thrilling five-set win over Eastern New Mexico Friday night.
The regular season comes to an end next weekend, and UT Tyler plays a two-game series against divisional rival Texas A&M-Commerce, hosting the first match between the teams Friday night before visiting Commerce Saturday to wrap up the 2019 campaign.
Kylee Becker recorded a team-high 10 kills for her fourth consecutive match with double-digit kills, and Savannah Guzman led the Patriots' defensive efforts with a team-high 14 digs as she notched her sixth consecutive match in double figures. West Texas A&M was led by a 20-kill performance from Torrey Miller, who committed just two attack errors on 31 attempts to finish with a .581 hitting percentage.
With the defeat, UT Tyler drops to 10-14 overall and 5-11 in Lone Star Conference play, while West Texas A&M improves to 19-5 overall and 12-4 in conference play.
How It Happened: West Texas A&M never trailed in a 25-15 opening-set win, producing an outstanding .440 team attack percentage in the opening set. The Lady Buffs broke a 2-2 tie with a 13-3 run, taking its largest lead of the set at 15-5. The Patriots adjusted in the second set, erasing an early 6-3 deficit with a 14-7 run to take a 17-13 lead. UT Tyler didn't relinquish the lead until West Texas A&M produced a 4-0 run to flip around a 21-19 deficit to take a 23-21 advantage. The teams sided out the rest of the way as West Texas A&M held on for a 25-23 win as Torrey Miller scored four of the Lady Buffs' final five points with four of her nine kills in the set.
West Texas A&M never trailed again, riding another seven kills from Miller to a 25-19 victory in the final set. The Patriots rallied from a 17-12 deficit, scoring six of the next seven points to tie the set at 18-18. The last four points of the run came from a pair of Kylee Becker kills plus two service aces from Maiya Peña. After attack errors by both teams to leave the set tied at 19-19, Miller broke the tie with her 19th kill to set off a 6-0 run which she finished with her 20th kill of the match for a 25-19 win.
By The Numbers: West Texas A&M posted the second-best attack percentage by any UT Tyler opponent this season, finishing the match at .309 after the Lady Buffs' hot start in the opening set… UT Tyler's best attacking set was the second set, when the Patriots notched 12 kills and registered a .186 attack percentage… UT Tyler's two team blocks were its fewest in a match this season… Both teams finished with five aces.
UT Tyler Stat Leaders: Kylee Becker had a team-high 10 kills, and Savannah Guzman led the Patriots in digs with 14. Taylor Stoops registered 28 assists as the primary setter, and she added six digs. Maiya Peña served three aces and had a hand in one of the Patriots' two blocks. Becker recorded five of her 10 kills in the second set, and Guzman also had seven of her 14 digs in the second set. Christina Escamilla notched seven kills, while Hannah Callison added six kills.
West Texas A&M Stat Leaders: Torrey Miller finished with a match-high 20 kills and posted a team-high .581 attack percentage, and she was the only hitter for the Lady Buffs with double-digit kills. Lindsey Smith added eight kills with a match-high three blocks, and Selena Batiste registered seven kills. Chandler Vogel led West Texas A&M defensively, collecting a match-high 18 digs.
What's Next: UT Tyler wraps up the 2019 season with a two-match divisional rivalry set against Texas A&M-Commerce, hosting the first match between the divisional rivals on Friday, Nov. 15 before visiting Commerce in the regular-season finale on Saturday, Nov. 16.
