TYLER, Texas –The University of Texas at Tyler Director of Athletics
Dr. Howard Patterson announced the hiring of
David Kaiser on Wednesday. Kaiser will be the Head Coach for the Patriot Cross Country and Track and Field programs.
Patterson commented, "During a nationwide search for the next Head Coach for UT Tyler's Track & Field and Cross Country programs we looked for an experienced coach who could continue to build upon the past successes of these programs and transition them into the NCAA Division II level while also succeeding in the Lone Star Conference. We could not be happier to welcome David to the Patriot family and looked forward to the continued growth and success of UT Tyler's Track & Field and Cross Country program at the NCAA Division II level."
Kaiser brings a wealth of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level while also adding athletics administration experience. During his career Kaiser has developed NCAA championship qualifiers across many track and field disciplines. Eight teams recorded Top 10 NCAA Regional and National Championship finishes while eight more recorded success with Top 20 finishes.
Most recently Kaiser served as the Assistant Men's Cross Country and Track and Field Coach at the University of Michigan. At Michigan, Kaiser was responsible for the administration, resource management, fundraising, recruitment, camp operations, and budget management for the program. At Michigan, Kaiser's student-athletes earned 29 Academic All-Big Ten selections and 35 Michigan Athletic Academic Achievement Awards. Four student-athletes recorded Top 10 Regional Track and Field meet finishes with three Top 20 NCAA meet finishers. In 2010, Michigan was awarded the USTFCCA All-Academic Team and in 2009 Michigan was named the NCAA Program of Distinction. Kaiser also coached Olympic Athlete Adam Harris in the long jump while also coaching National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American Frank Shotwell. In addition, Kaiser served a crucial role as Michigan won the 2008 Big Ten Outdoor Championship, 20019 Big Ten Indoor Runner-up finish, two All-Americans, a pair of NCAA qualifiers, seven Big Ten Conference Championships, and 37 All-Big Ten Selections.
Kaiser commented on his hiring, "I am extremely humbled at the opportunity that Dr. Patterson and the search committee has afforded me, to be named the Head Men's and Women's Cross Country/Track and Field coach, is fantastic. To be in the position to lead the Patriot programs into the NCAA Division II era is an opportunity that I do not take lightly."
From 2010 until his hiring at UT Tyler, Kaiser served as the Director of Athletics and Facilities Coordinator for the Milan Area Schools in Milan, Michigan. Kaiser oversaw all aspects of the middle and high school athletic programs, including program development and promotion, hiring, fundraising, scheduling, budget preparation, personnel and game management and conflict resolution. Under his command, Milan won 25 Huron League Championships in 12 sports, two consecutive All-Sports Trophies, 19 MHSAA District Championships, five MHSAA Regional Championships, four MHSAA Final Four appearances, and one MHSAA State Championship.
Kaiser added, "I am extremely thankful that Coach Bob Hepler and Coach Chris Stonestreet have laid the foundation for us to build a national NCAA Division 2 cross country and track & field program on and we will work hard to do that.People who know me know I'm a tireless worker, and I am driven to succeed. I am going to bring that same focus, passion and drive to the Patriot programs. I am so excited to get settled in and organized, meet the team and become a part of the Patriot community."
Prior to his coaching career at Michigan, Kaiser was the Director of Sports Performance at Velocity Sports Performance in Friendswood, Texas. While at Velocity Sports Performance, Kaiser was responsible for operational management, staff acquisition and development, marketing, program development, and financial oversight. In his role Kaiser was able to position the franchise as the fastest growing Sports Performance company in the country. Kaiser conducted client assessments and implemented specialized training programs for individual clients. Of those plans, Kaiser conducted 11 NFL Combine training programs in which five players were drafted and five who became NFL Free Agents. Additionally, Kaiser directed programming for NFL, NBA, MLB, and collegiate athletes while developing youth programs for area football, soccer, volleyball, baseball, and track athletes.
Kaiser served as the Assistant Men's and Women's Track and Field Coordinator/Instructor at East Carolina University, DePaul University, and Purdue University. Kaiser was the Co-Interim Head Coach of the Women's Cross Country and Track Field program at Clemson University and was a Regional Sales Representative at UCS, Inc.
Kaiser earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education with an emphasis in Physical Education from The University of Kansas before earning his Masters of Education with an emphasis in Biomechanics and Sports Management from The University of Kansas. Furthermore, Kaiser is a USA Track and Field Level 1 Certified Coach, USA Track and Field Level 2 Certified Coach in Jumps, Kaiser has a USTFCCCA Track and Field Technical Certification, and is a USATF Certified Track and Field Official.
