TYLER, Texas – UT Tyler produced a pair of first-half goals and cruised to a 3-0 win over crosstown rival Texas College Tuesday night in the Patriots' home opener. Three different players put the ball in the back of the net, starting just over midway through the opening half when
Noah Kubala broke the scoreless tie in the 28
th minute with his first goal of the season.
Hector Rivera and
Travis Collins also added their first scores of the season for the final 3-0 margin, and goalkeepers
Parker O'Quinn and
Giancarlo Ayanegui each protected the net for 45 minutes to post a combined shutout.
With the win, UT Tyler improves to 2-1 on the season with its second straight win by a score of 3-0.
How It Happened:
Noah Kubala started his own scoring play when he poked the ball away from a Texas College attacker near midfield.
Ramiro Alvarez played it forward across midfield to
Steven Chavez, who quickly led Kubala down the right side into the box. Kubala beat the nearest defender into the box and settled it to his right foot for a perfect shot to the far post.
With just over three minutes left in the half, the Patriots regained possession near midfield and switched the ball from left to right for another counterattack opportunity. After a Texas College deflection, the ball ended up at the feet of
Hector Rivera at the top of the box. From 22 yards out, he sent the ball on one bounce to the right side past the goalkeeper to push the lead to 2-0 just before halftime.
Midway through the second half, Alvarez picked off another Texas College pass near midfield to spark a quick counter. Alvarez found
Travis Collins moving forward near midfield, and he played it ahead to Chavez where the goalkeeper charged out to clear it away. However, it landed back at the feet of Collins, who lifted it over the defense from 23 yards out for the final 3-0 margin.

Quotable (UT Tyler head coach Kenny Jones): "This was our most complete game yet on both sides of the ball. We're starting to get on the same page, and overall we were much more cohesive than the previous games we've played. Collectively, we had some of the same ideas going forward, and we had some of the same ideas defending, and that's a byproduct of the work that's taking place in training. Attacking-wise, we had ideas of what we were trying to do, and we did a good job executing those ideas."
"Sometimes you worry that with the first home game, the guys start playing with more emotion than the habits they've trained, but tonight was a mixture of both. They were excited to play but weren't too nervous, and they controlled the game."
