LUBBOCK, Texas -- No. 12-ranked UT Tyler opened up its fifth Lone Star Conference series of the season with a 14-3 road win over Lubbock Christian Friday night, collecting a run-rule win behind a 10-run sixth-inning outburst.
The Patriots sent 15 batters to the plate in the 10-run sixth, pushing three runs across before the first out of the inning. They added the remaining seven runs with one out, turning what had been a 3-3 tie game after four innings into a seven-inning run-rule victory.
Tanner Roach and Riley Jepson led the offense from the top two spots in the lineup, combining for five hits, five runs, five RBIs, and four walks on the day. UT Tyler produced 12 hits and drew nine walks, and the Patriots were aided by eight Lubbock Christian errors to tie a season-high in scoring with 14 runs.
With the win, UT Tyler improved to 17-2 overall and in the Lone Star Conference standings. Lubbock Christian dropped to 6-13.
How It Happened: UT Tyler scored single runs in four of the first five innings, but LCU tied the game twice, matching the Patriots' first-inning run on Tanner Roach's leadoff triple and a Riley Jepson single with a single run in the second. Bowie Farris knocked in a run in the third, and Cade Watson produced another in the fourth with a bunt single that extended the lead to 3-1.
Lubbock Christian got both of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game at 3-3 with a one-out single followed by an unearned run on a two-out error. Kyle McShaffry's two-out double in the top of the fifth pushed across the go-ahead run, and the Patriots exploded for 10 runs on six hits and five errors in the top of the sixth inning to take a 14-3 lead.
Riley Jepson delivered a two-run single, and Jordan Gochenour and Cody Windisch added run-scoring singles which made it 11-3. Tanner Roach drew a bases-loaded walk, and Jepson collected his second run-producing hit of the frame with a one-out RBI single that made it 13-3. The Patriots wrapped up the scoring on Bowie Farris' fielder's choice grounder.
Starting pitcher Austin Schneider notched six strikeouts in 3.1 innings, but he exited in the fourth inning with three runs allowed (two earned) on three hits before yielding the rest of the game to the bullpen. Max Page took over in the fourth inning and added a scoreless fifth to earn the win, and Corey Flanagan tossed two scoreless frames to finish off the win.
