Volleyball Sweeps DBU To Improve To 2-0

UT Tyler built on Tuesday’s impressive season-opening victory with a Wednesday sweep over DBU

TYLER, Texas -- UT Tyler build on its impressive season-opening win with a three-set sweep (28-26, 25-15, 25-9) over DBU Wednesday night, giving the Patriots a 2-0 start to the season.

For the second consecutive night, UT Tyler won its first set by a narrow 28-26 margin, but this time the Patriots did so without dropping the first set. With the first set win under their belt, the Patriots posted 25-15 and 25-9 wins in the second and third sets to pull away for the victory.

Evelyn Torres led the UT Tyler offense this time with a match-high 14 kills, and Mikayla Ware served 5 aces to go with 9 kills and 10 digs. Hattie Murray registered 6 blocks to lead the Patriots to a team total of 9 blocks on the night.

With the victory, UT Tyler improved to 2-0 overall while DBU is now 0-2 to start the campaign.

How It Happened: In an opening set with 8 tie scores, the only lead change came when the Patriots erased a 3-0 deficit in short order, scoring 7 of the next 9 points to take a 7-5 lead. UT Tyler never trailed again, but its largest lead was only 3 points the rest of the way as DBU battled back and fought off set point four times in the opening set before Mikayla Ware broke a 26-26 tie with a kill and followed it with a set-clinching ace for the 28-26 victory.

DBU's only lead of the second set, and its final lead of the night, was a 2-1 edge that was erased by 3 consecutive UT Tyler kills. The Patriots finished the second set with an impressive 14-5 run to win by a 25-15 margin, and the biggest run of the third set was an 8-0 start behind the serve of Ware. After a DBU sideout, Savannah Guzman served a 5-0 run which extended the lead to 13-1, and UT Tyler led by double digits the rest of the way in a 25-9 third-set win.

By The Numbers: UT Tyler settled in after the tight opening set, committing only 4 attack errors in the second and third sets combined… The Patriots notched a second-set attack percentage of .389 and a third-set percentage of .474… UT Tyler's service reception was perfect, handling all 48 DBU serves without a reception error… Mikayla Ware and Evelyn Torres combined for 41 errorless service receptions… For the second consecutive match, UT Tyler led in every team statistical category, posting advantages in kills, digs, aces, and blocks.

UT Tyler Stat Leaders: Evelyn Torres registered a match-high 14 kills with only 3 errors in 30 attempts, finishing with a .367 hitting percentage to go with a team-high 12 digs and 3 blocks. Hattie Murray had a hand in 6 of the Patriots' 9 blocks, and Mikayla Ware added 9 kills, 10 digs, and a match-high 5 aces. Taylor Stoops delivered 22 assists, and Callie Craus added 17 assists for a UT Tyler offense which converted at a .312 attack percentage for the match.

DBU Stat Leaders: Bailey Hebert was DBU's kills leader with 9 kills, and she also notched 10 digs. Alyssa Prevehouse was the team's digs leader with 16.

What's Next: UT Tyler is on the road next week to take on Texas Woman's University in a pair of weeknight matches on Feb. 2 and 3.
