WAIKOLOA, HAWAII – The University of Texas at Tyler men's golf team opened up play in the Dennis Rose Invitational on Monday afternoon with a team score of 303.
The Patriots 303 in the first 18 of a 54-hole event at the Waikoloa Beach Course placed UT Tyler in 10
th place entering Tuesday and Wednesday's final two rounds. Sophomore
Jackson Powers continued to lead the Patriots for the third event in a row with a first round score of 72.
CSU San Bernardino and Western New Mexico both finished round one atop the team leaderboard with totals of 280 to pace the 12-team field. Brian Nielsen of CSU San Bernardino led the field on the individual leaderboard with a four-under 66 in round one.
Powers sits in a tie for 18
th place on the leaderboard after his two-over round on the par 70 Beach Course, carding two birdies to make up for a seven on the par three 14
th hole. Powers rebounded from that hole with the aforementioned two birdies and 15 pars to complete his steady first round.
Sophomore
Carter Lewis shot a first round 74 to sit in a tie for 34
th following the opening round. Sophomore
Garrett Honeycutt was next on the board for the Patriots with a 78, sitting in a tie for 52
nd place.
Freshman
Trent Pollard (79) and
Francesco Abba (82) rounded out the team scores for UT Tyler.
Alex Kopenhaver (79) and
Jackson Naeger (72) are both competing as individuals in the event.
Round two will get underway tomorrow morning beginning at 7:30 local time.
