SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Patriots stayed close in the contest but just couldn't find the offense late in the second half as they bow out of the LSC postseason tournament by a score of 3-1.
Each team looked to take control of the match early, combining for eight shots in the first 20 minutes of play. However, neither team was able to steal momentum for themselves throughout those first 20 minutes as possession swayed back and forth.
In the 29
th minute of the contest, Alonso Rodriguez was able to break the stalemate. Play started after a throw in that bounced around between several players before finding its way to Sebastian Rivera. Rivera was able to send in a deep cross to the box and Rodriguez got his head to it to slide it past
Mathias Eriksen.
The final 16 minutes of the half slipped by with just three shots from both teams. At the halftime buzzer, the Rattlers outshot the Patriots 13-4. Six of those shots for St. Mary's ended up on goal.
Just four minutes into the second half of play, Erwin Regules scored a goal of his own. After the Rattlers earned a free kick just outside the left side of the box, Regules curled in a perfect shot from the set piece and just past a diving Eriksen to go up 2-0.
With momentum firmly in the hands of St. Mary's,
Michael Agyeman answered the call. After tracking down a ball wide of the box, Agyeman dribbled it to his right foot and struck a low laser that ricocheted off of the inside of the right post and bounced to the back of the net. That goal was the second of the season for Agyeman and almost a mirror image of his first.
After the goal UT Tyler kept up the pressure. They forced a pair of corner kicks just 30 seconds apart and that was followed up by a shot on goal from
Bryan Rivas-Guzman. The Patriots kept up the offensive pressure until a counter attack from the Rattlers forced Rivas-Guzman to take a foul in the box.
That foul led to a penalty kick, and it was calmly taken by Deni Cresto to make the score 3-1 and put the Patriots out of reach with just over 11 minutes to play.
The Patriots finished the season at 8-8-1 and a 4-4 record in conference play. UT Tyler has now made the LSC postseason tournament two years in a row and they will look to build on that momentum in the 2022 season.
