COMMERCE, TEXAS – A golden goal by Texas A&M-Commerce finally put an end to an offensive slugfest in the Lone Star Conference opener for The University of Texas at Tyler women's soccer team.
That goal in the 98
th minute ended a 4-3 game that featured a total of 47 shots between the two teams, 23 of which were on goal. The Patriots scored in the first and final five minutes of both the first and second half to keep pace with a Lion squad that registered 30 shot attempts themselves in the Lone Star Conference opener for both sides.
Shaylee Anaya put the first goal on the board at the 3:53 mark of the opening half off of a deflected set piece that eventually found it's way into the back of the Lion goal off the foot of Anaya.
Landri Edwards was credited with the assist after dumping the ball into the Texas A&M-Commerce penalty box off of a free kick.
Two Lion goals in the 17
th and 35
th minutes flipped the Patriot one-goal advantage into the hands of Texas A&M-Commerce heading into the late stages of the first half. UT Tyler was able to tie it up at the 43:24 mark on a highlight-reel finish from
Sydnee Garner, who's diving header off of a cross from the right side of the penalty box from
Ashlynn Thomas tied the match up at 2-2 heading into the second half of action.
Texas A&M-Commerce had 16 shot attempts in the first half alone while UT Tyler totaled six.
That 2-2 tie would last less than two minutes as Texas A&M-Commerce's Leslie Campuzano scored her second goal of the match at the 46:26 mark to put the Lions ahead 3-2. That score would hold steady for nearly 40 more minutes of the game before
Sarah Flannelly netted the third goal of the contest for the Patriots at the 86:02 mark of the match.
Flannelly's late goal with just a few minutes remaining in the game came off yet another set piece for the Patriots as another deflected ball off a free kick right in front of the Lion keeper landed at the feet of Flannelly, who was able to finish the equalizer to effectively send the game into extra time.
Kiersten Ehler was credited with the assist for her service of the ball off of the free kick into the Lion box.
Each team posted a single shot attempt in the overtime period before Mindy Shoffit's golden goal gave the Lion's the 4-3 victory.
Anaya, Gardener and
Jordan Colbert each had multiple shot on goal attempts for the Patriots.
Annabel Westbrook was credited with the second assist on the Gardner goal in the 44
th minute to record the fourth assist on the night for UT Tyler.
The Patriots will take part in the second of three road Lone Star Conference match-ups to kick-off an abbreviated spring conference schedule for UT Tyler on Saturday evening with a match set for a 6 p.m. kick against Texas Woman's.
