Volleyball Completes Season Sweep Of DBU

UT Tyler posted a 25-14, 25-15, 25-18 sweep over DBU in the Patriots’ first match as a Division II Top 25-ranked program

DALLAS -- On the day of its first Division II Top 25 ranking, the No. 22-ranked UT Tyler volleyball team played up to its ranking with a dominant 25-14, 25-15, 25-18 sweep at DBU Wednesday night to complete a four-match season series sweep.

The Patriots dominated the match defensively, recording nearly as many digs (73) in Wednesday's three-set sweep as they produced the night before in four sets (76). UT Tyler also held DBU to season-lows in kills (20) and hitting percentage (-.025).

Savannah Guzman was one of four Patriots with double-digit digs, finishing with a match-high 20 digs, and Christina Escamilla produced match-highs of 13 kills and 3 blocks.

With the win, UT Tyler improved to 8-0 overall and is one of three remaining undefeated programs in the Lone Star Conference. The Patriots are one victory away from securing at least a share of the LSC Central Division title with four regular-season matches left on the schedule. DBU falls to 1-7.

The Patriots notched 13 kills in the opening set, using a 10-3 run to turn an early 3-point edge into a commanding double-digit margin at 17-7. Kylee Becker had 2 kills and an ace, and Mikayla Ware added 2 kills and a block during the set-turning run. The closest DBU got the rest of the set was 8 points, as UT Tyler scored 6 of the final 9 points of the set to start the match with a 25-14 opening set win.

UT Tyler used a 14-5 run in the second set to take another double-digit lead, 20-9, and the Patriots scored the final 3 points on kills from Christina Escamilla and Hattie Murray before Kylee Becker served a set-clinching ace for the 25-15 win.

The Patriots followed the same template in the third set, turning an early 6-4 lead into a 15-6 margin by scoring 9 of 11 points with 3 kills each from Escamilla and Ware during the run. However, DBU responded with a 12-5 run, closing the gap to just 2 points, 20-18. UT Tyler finished things off with 5 consecutive kills, including 3 from Escamilla to close out the 3-set sweep.
