AUSTIN, Texas --
Riley Jepson's two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning capped a 3-for-6, 6-RBI performance and gave No. 21-ranked UT Tyler a pair of crucial insurance runs in an 11-10 road win over St. Edward's in the opening game of the three-game Lone Star Conference series Friday night.
Austin Schneider picked up the win as the Patriots took the lead in the top of the sixth and never relinquished it, answering every St. Edward's challenge as both teams scored all 21 of their combined runs from the fifth inning on.
With the win, UT Tyler has now won four straight and improved to 5-2 on the season, while St. Edward's falls to 3-1 in its first game action since the Hilltoppers swept Eastern New Mexico in the opening weekend of the season (Feb. 5-6).
How It Happened: After the teams traded zeroes for four innings, UT Tyler broke through with the game's first runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Kyle McShaffry led off the frame with a double, and
Riley Jepson came through with a 2-out, 2-run single. St. Edward's responded with a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
Jepson added another 2-out, 2-run single an inning later, capping a 4-run outburst in the top of the sixth for a 6-3 lead. The Patriots never relinquished the lead, although St. Edward's scored a pair in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-5.
UT Tyler kept the pressure on with 2 runs in the seventh, 1 run in the eighth, and 2 more on Jepson's 2-run blast in the ninth to withstand 5 runs from the Hilltoppers over the final 2 frames.
Jordan Gochenour hit a 1-out solo home run in the eighth inning, giving the Patriots a 9-5 lead before the Hilltoppers pulled back within a run with 3 runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Matthew McMillan halted the St. Edward's rally with the final out of the eighth inning, and he worked out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the ninth to register the save.
By The Numbers: The teams combined for 21 runs and 27 hits and were only separated by 1 in each category… St. Edward's registered 14 hits and UT Tyler had 13, but the Patriots took advantage of 3 Hilltopper errors to plate 3 unearned runs in the contest… Five UT Tyler hitters registered multiple hits, led by
Riley Jepson's 3-hit day while four of his teammates collected 2 hits each (
Edward Ortiz,
Jordan Gochenour,
Ethan Bedgood, and
Kyle McShaffry).
Up Next: UT Tyler and St. Edward's meet Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. both days for the second and third games of the 3-game Lone Star Conference series.
