AUSTIN, Texas -- UT Tyler completed its second consecutive Lone Star Conference series sweep with an 8-2 road win over St. Edward's Sunday afternoon.
Â
Jordan Gochenour hit a pair of home runs in the victory, including a 2-run shot in the first inning which gave UT Tyler a lead it preserved the entire game. The Patriots added 5 runs in the fourth inning before Gochenour added a fifth-inning solo home run to build an 8-1 lead.
Â
Starting pitcher
Garrett Arredondo was sharp, scattering 1 run on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts to earn the win, and relievers
Reagan MacDonald and
Nick Niebur each struck out 2 batters to help preserve the Patriots' comfortable lead through the late innings.
Â
Gochenour finished the game 2-for-4 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs, and
Cade Watson also went 2-for-4.
Â
With the win, UT Tyler now owns a 6-game winning streak and a 7-2 overall record. St. Edward's fell to 3-3.
Â
How It Happened: Jordan Gochenour hit a 2-run home run to center with 2 outs in the top of the first, giving starting pitcher
Garrett Arredondo a 2-run cushion as he took the mound for the bottom of the first. St. Edward's responded with consecutive base hits and a sacrifice fly, but Arredondo settled in and registered back-to-back strikeouts to end the opening frame with a 2-1 lead.
Â
After both teams went scoreless for the second and third, Gochenour drew a 1-out walk and scored on an
Edward Ortiz double to start a 5-run inning for the Patriots.
Cade Watson added an RBI double, and
Hayden Clearman followed with an RBI single before
Kyle Hawkins laid down a bunt to score Watson from third to make it a 6-1 lead. A 2-out balk scored Clearman from third base to finish the 5-run frame and give the Patriots a 7-1 edge.
Â
Gochenour led off the fifth with a solo home run to right-center, extending the lead to 8-1, and Arredondo kept the margin there until he left the game after six strong innings of work. St. Edward's got one run back in the seventh, using a pair of walks and some aggressive baserunning to plate a run on a wild pitch that cut the lead to 8-2. However,
Reagan MacDonald ended the threat with his second strikeout of the inning, and
Nick Niebur retired 6 of the 7 batters he faced over the final 2 innings to preserve the win.
