TYLER, TEXAS – The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team fell by a final score of 15-1 in the series finale against #3 Angelo State.
#11 UT Tyler cost themselves a chance at a season-opening series victory over the preseason no. 1 selected Rams, but will have a plethora of chances to jump back into the top of the Lone Star Conference standings as the season continues to get underway. UT Tyler posted three hits in the effort and succeeded 15 free bases to Angelo State with six walks and nine hit by pitches throughout the contest.
UT Tyler will continue their start to the 2021 campaign with a road series next weekend at Texas A&M-International. Texas A&M-International started off their 2021 season with a 2-1 series win over UT Permian Basin this weekend.
How it Happened: Garrett Arredondo got his first start of the 2021 season on Sunday afternoon for the Patriots, but lasted just over two innings on the mound as Angelo State struck for six runs in the top of the third to get their afternoon started. UT Tyler scored on a
Riley Jepson single in the bottom half of the inning that scored
Riley Lambert from third. That two-out single would be the only one of it's kind for the Patriots throughout the afternoon.
A Patriot bullpen that shutout Angelo State in last night's 2-1 victory for the Patriots couldn't repeat their efficient work and allowed two more runs in the fifth. Angelo State continued to extend the advantage with five runs in the fifth and a pair of runs in the sixth.
A Look at the Numbers: Jepson,
Jordan Gochenour and
Edward Ortiz recorded the three hits for the Patriots… UT Tyler drew four walks and struck out six Rams…
Nathan Holmes pitched 1.2 innings and didn't allow a single hit… Angelo State had 12 hits, but stranded double-digit runners on base (10) for the second night in a row.
Up Next: UT Tyler will head to Laredo, Texas for a three-game set with Texas A&M-International on Feb. 12-14. All three games are set for a 1 p.m. start.
