Patriots Fall 5-2 to #17 West Texas A&M

#17 UT Tyler outhit the Buffs by a 9-to-8 margin on Sunday afternoon in the series finale, but fell by a 5-2 final tally

TYLER, TEXAS - #11 UT Tyler fell by a final scored of 5-2 against #17 West Texas A&M in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

The Patriots were ultimately unable to string together their nine hits in the contest and fell by a 5-2 decision to finish the weekend with a 1-2 record against #17 West Texas A&M. Kyle McShaffry, Riley Jepson and Cade Watson all posted two hits on the day as the Patriots posted a one-hit higher total than the Buffs on the afternoon.

West Texas A&M scored on their fourth at bat of the game in a series-deciding game three with a double to left field that opened up the scoring for either team. The Buffs extended that lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second with two more runs before Watson drove in Edward Ortiz in the third to answer the opening three runs for the Buffs.

Ortiz got on base via an error to open up the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch before moving over to third on a groundout by McShaffry. Watson's singled drove in Ortiz on the ensuing at bat.

Lukas Polanco scored McShaffry in the eighth on a single to left field to narrow the margin to just three and force a save opportunity for the Buffs. The Buffs proved up to the challenge and retired the Patriots in order in the bottom of the ninth to complete the series-deciding victory.

Nolan Cox was effective out of the bullpen for the Patriots in relief of starter Garrett Arredondo, going 3.1 innings while allowing just two hits and no earned runs. Matthew McMillan came on for the final two frames and retired six of the seven batters he faced.

The loss places the Patriots in third place in the Lone Star Conference standings with a record of 8-4 in conference play.

The Patriots will look to get back in the win column this weekend as they continue a six-game homestand next weekend with Eastern New Mexico. That series is set for a single game on Friday afternoon beginning at 4 p.m. and a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
