TYLER, TEXAS - #18 UT Tyler continued to roll on Tuesday night inside the Herrington Patriot Center with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-11) sweep of Texas Woman's to move to 11-0 on the season.
Â
The win continued to establish the already-crowned division champion Patriots (11-0, 11-0 LSC) as the class of the Central Division for the abbreviated 2021 spring scheduled as UT Tyler has now swept six matches by 3-0 final tallies and have won 33 of their 39 sets this season. UT Tyler flipped an early deficit in set number one to cruise to set two and three victories, including a third set in which the Patriots hit .424 as a team and committed just a single attacking error as a unit.
Â
Kylee Becker totaled 17 kills for the night, matching the third-highest kill total in a three-set match in program history. Becker hit .400 for the night, notching those 17 kills on just 35 swings, and committed just three attack errors in those 35 attempts.
Â
Becker was the offensive catalyst for a Patriot attack that posted a team hitting percentage of .292 for the night.
Â
Texas Woman's scored the first points of the match and led in every point from there on until a three-kill rally for the Patriots finally evened the score up at 16-16 in set number one. Becker posted the first two kills of that rally before
Christina Escamilla finally squared the set up at 16-16 with the third straight Patriot point.
Â
Escamilla was one of three other Patriots alongside
Evelyn Torres and
Hannah Callison to notch seven kills on the evening and provide offensive support for Becker.
Â
The point differential stayed at one between the two sides until UT Tyler scored five of the last six points to jump ahead after the set was knotted up at 20-20 to secure the first set victory. The Patriots once again earned the final three-point rally with three-straight kills by
Maiya Peña
, Callison and Becker.
Â
The second set proved to be nearly the exact opposite format as the first set as UT Tyler grasped the early momentum, jumping out to a 10-6 lead, before Texas Woman's provided the mid-set comeback to notch the set up at 11-11. Both teams alternated five-point rallies a few points later to keep the margin at two at 20-18.
Â
Becker built that Patriot advantage to four with two-straight kills to move the score to 22-18, and then sat back and watched as
Hattie Murray and
Evelyn Torres put down the set-winning kills a few points later.
Â
The third and final set was all UT Tyler as the Patriots posted their best team hitting percentage in a set of the night at .424. The Patriots built a 14-5 lead in the set as Texas Woman's had no answer for a relentless Patriot attack.
Â
UT Tyler made their final statement of the match with nine of the final 10 points of the final set to remain undefeated on the year.
Â
The Patriot defense stepped up in a big way after getting off to a sluggish start, limiting the Pioneers to .083 and .067 hitting percentages in the second and third sets. Texas Woman's failed to reach double digit kill totals in either the second or third while UT Tyler posted 17 kills in the first set and 15 in the final two.
Â
Taylor Stoops totaled 20 assists in the effort while
Callie Craus had 17. Torres and libero
Savannah Guzman each reached double-digit dig totals with 15 and 11 respectively.
Â
UT Tyler will finish off the regular season tomorrow night at 6 p.m. against Texas Woman's for a rematch of tonight's action and fourth meeting between the two sides of the year. The Patriot volleyball program will recognize
Brianna Bellehumeur and
Olivia Burnett prior to the match in honor of Senior Night.
