Baseball Posts 9-4 Win To Secure Series Win

UT Tyler posted a 9-4 win at Lubbock Christian to secure its eighth Lone Star Conference series win and a chance to sweep the season-ending series Sunday

LUBBOCK, Texas -- UT Tyler produced consistent scoring throughout a 9-4 road win over Lubbock Christian Saturday, as the Patriots claimed their second consecutive win over the Chaparrals to secure the series win and a chance for a 3-game series sweep in Sunday's season finale.

The Patriots' offense, which averaged 11 runs per game in its previous 5 contests entering Saturday's game, continued to produce. UT Tyler scored runs in each of the first 5 frames, building up a 9-2 lead through 7 innings before LCU put 2 runs on the board in the eighth inning.

Kyler Bumstead led the way, reaching safely in each of his first 5 plate appearances with a hit and 2 walks while also reaching twice after being hit by pitch. Kyle McShaffry went 2-for-4 and drove in a game-high 3 runs.

McShaffry led off the scoring with a 2-run single with 2 outs in the top of the first inning, and he drove in another in the top of the fourth when he was hit by pitch with the bases loaded. The Patriots added single runs in the second and fourth inning and 2 runs each in the third and fifth innings to take an 8-2 lead after 5 innings.

UT Tyler added an unearned run in the top of the seventh on a 2-out error before Larry Leitha hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the Patriots' lead to 9-4.

Jacob Blatney scattered 2 runs on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts in 5 innings of work to earn the victory. Keith Long earned the save with 4 innings of relief, surrendering just 2 runs on Leitha's eighth-inning homer while notching a season-high 7 strikeouts.

With the win, UT Tyler improved to 25-14 overall and 23-12 in LSC play, while Lubbock Christian dropped to 16-20 overall and 14-18 in the LSC.
