Jepson Named Second Team All-Conference as Patriots Total Seven All-LSC Awards

Senior Riley Jepson was named as a Second Team All-Lone Star Conference selection to lead the way for UT Tyler on the All-LSC list

RICHARDSON, TEXAS – UT Tyler baseball accumulated a total of seven awards on the 2021 Lone Star Conference Baseball All-Conference Awards list as announced by the league office Wednesday morning.

Senior Riley Jepson was named to the Second Team All-Lone Star Conference list after leading the Patriots all season long at the plate. Kyler Bumstead, A.J. Irvin, Matthew McMillan and Kyle McShaffry were all named as Honorable Mention All-Lone Star Conference selections while Jordan Gochenour was named as a member of both the All-Academic and All-Defensive teams.

The All-Lone Star Conference Awards are the first for the UT Tyler baseball program in the LSC after last season's list wasn't released following the cancellation of the remainder of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. West Texas A&M was honored with the Coaching Staff of the Year Award while Angelo State's Josh Elvir and Trent Baker were named the LSC Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.

Jepson led the Patriots in batting average for the second year in a row this spring, finishing his season with a .353 average while seeing time at multiple slots in the lineup. The Kamloops, British Colombia native proved to be effective whether at the top or in the heart of the lineup, and totaled 55 hits on the year with nine doubles and five homeruns.

He finished 12th in the Lone Star Conference with 40 RBI on the year and had 15 multi-hit games.

Bumstead worked his way into the lineup and then to the top of the lineup this spring, finishing his junior campaign with an average of .386 in his 25 games played. Bumstead seized a prominent starting role on Mar. 19 against Cameron, and never looked back, recording a hit in all but four of the final 24 games of the season for the Patriots.

The Kountze, Texas native posted an on-base percentage of .551 and recorded 21 RBI in his 83 at bats to close out the 2021 season.

McShaffry was a staple in the Patriots order and at third base all season long, posting an average at the plate of .306. He finished fourth on the club with 33 RBI on the year and played and started in all 40 games for the Patriots.

The Cypress, Texas recorded nine doubles and four homers in his junior season in 2021.

Irvin and McMillan combined to produce one of the best setup-closer combinations in the Lone Star Conference this spring. Irvin finished the season with a 2-1 record in his 15 appearances in relief, recording an ERA of 3.52.

He allowed just nine earned runs in 23.0 innings pitched this spring, and limited opponents to just a .217 average. The sophomore struck out 27 batters in 2021 and will return next spring as one of the top options out of the bullpen for head coach Brent Porche and company.
McMillan assumed his role as a premier closer once again in 2021 for the Patriots, leading the LSC with seven saves while producing a record of 3-1. He made 20 appearances in relief for the club, most among relief pitchers, and finished his sophomore campaign with 31 strikeouts in 25.0 innings pitched.

Gochenour played and started in all 40 games for the Patriots and finished second on the team with a .314 average for the year. He totaled 34 RBI and hit seven homers at the plate in 2021 while also serving as one of the best defensive first basemen in the LSC.
