Patriots Finish Road Trip With Third Consecutive 3-0 Win

The UT Tyler volleyball has now strung together three straight 3-0 wins with Saturday's win over St. Edward's to move to 8-0 on the year

AUSTIN, TEXAS - #23 UT Tyler recorded their third straight Lone Star Conference sweep on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 26-24) road victory over St. Edward's.

The Patriots win on Saturday afternoon made it a clean 6-0 sweep for the team's opening LSC road series of the season following Friday night's win at St. Mary's, and extends the regular season winning streak to 20 straight wins. UT Tyler forced St. Edward's into 30 attacking errors in just three sets played on Saturday afternoon, limiting the Hilltoppers to a .000 attacking percentage for the match.

UT Tyler maintained the lead through the entirety of both the first and second sets in 25-12 and 25-17 wins, and then held on to win a third set by a 26-24 final after a late St. Edward's rally. Senior Mikayla Ware notched her fifth double-double of the season and second consecutive outstanding match with 10 kills and 13 digs.

Junior Savannah Guzman also had a stellar night defensively, leading the team with 14 digs on the night.

UT Tyler went to work early in the opening set on Saturday, building a 17-7 lead thanks to seven attack errors by the Hilltoppers throughout the opening stretch of play. St. Edward's could only manage to narrow the deficit down to seven before four straight points in favor of the Patriots closed out the set with a 25-12 final.

The Patriots forced St. Edward's into more attacking errors (10) than they had kills (9) in the opening frame and a -.026 hitting percentage.

Set number two was more of the same, as UT Tyler opened up with an 11-5 lead through the early stages of the second set. St. Edward's found their footing midway through the set, and cut the lead to just two at the 18-16 mark.

The rest of the set was all UT Tyler, however, as the Patriots finish off the frame with a 7-1 run capped off by a pair of aces by Guzman and then a set-clinching kill from Ware. The Hilltopper offense once again struggled mightily in the second, posting 10 errors and 10 kills to finish with a .000 hitting percentage against a sound UT Tyler defense.

The third set was a story of runs as each side of the net found stretches of momentum in spurts throughout what would ultimately be the final set of the match. The first of those runs came in favor of St. Edward's as the Hilltoppers found their first lead of the match with a 7-2 run to open up set number three.

St. Edward's found another string of points heading into the late stages of the set to once again pad a lead at the 19-17 mark, before a five-point run of their own completely flipped the script in favor of UT Tyler. That run established a 23-20 advantage for the Patriots, an advantage that would prove to be short lived, however, as the Hilltoppers responded by tying up the set at 24-24 with a 4-1 run.

The late set heroics for St. Edward's would end there however, as a kill from UT Tyler's Hannah Callison followed up by an attacking error for the Hilltoppers ended the set at 26-24 and the match at 3-0.

Callison was second on the team in kills for the night with eight, and also added to a nice night at the net for UT Tyler with a pair of blocks. Junior Maiya Peña led the way in the blocking category with four on the night.

UT Tyler hit .202 as a team and totaled 11 kills in each of the three sets to finish the evening with 33 total.

Four Lone Star Conference teams remain undefeated in LSC play after two weeks of league matches, while UT Tyler and Texas A&M-Kingsville are the lone two teams in the conference to remain undefeated on the year with 8-0 records.

The Patriots will return to their home gym next weekend with home matches on Friday night and Saturday afternoon against Oklahoma Christian and Arkansas-Fort Smith.
