A SLOW START AND A STRONG FINISH
The UT Tyler volleyball program got off to a sluggish start in last weekend's home stand against Texas A&M International, falling to the Dustdevils on Friday night by a 3-2 final. The Patriots had match point in the fourth set up 24-21, but five straight points from the Dustdevils completely turned the tide of the contest and allowed Texas A&M International to force a fifth set. Texas A&M International secured the 15-11 victory in that final frame, snapping the Patriot's 18 straight regular season home match winning streak. Senior
Mikayla Ware led the Patriots with 18 kills, while junior
Evelyn Torres chipped in 15 to highlight a slow offensive outing for the squad. The Patriot's defense stood strong, as five different players total double-digit digs, led by a 19-dig output from senior
Savannah Guzman. UT Tyler hit just .146 as a team, and committed an uncharacteristic 29 attacking errors in the contest, while putting down 59 kills. The Patriots defensive work at the net kept them in the majority of the match with 14.0 total blocks, but the cold offensive effort for UT Tyler ultimately couldn't be overcome in the late stages. Saturday was a different story as UT Tyler responded after a first set loss with three straight victories to find their form in a 3-1 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville. UT Tyler found their footing offensively after struggling on Friday night in 25-20 and 25-13 third and fourth set victories, posting team hitting percentages of .326 and .268 in the frames. Seniors
Mikayla Ware (15),
Hannah Callison (12) and freshman
Jeorgia Jones (10) all registered double-digit kills on an afternoon in which the UT Tyler offense totaled 55 kills. The Patriots posted 32 of those kills in the third and fourth sets with 19 and 14 respectively, and posted a much-improved .201 team hitting percentage in the match. Ware and setter
Adeline Ortman both reached double-digit figures for a second-straight match with Ware adding 21 digs to her 15 kills and Ortman posting 24 assists and 13 digs.
WHAT COACH MASHE IS SAYING
On how the mindset has changed of the team after an unexpected loss against Texas A&M International... "Our mindset should change, our back's are against the wall and we've seen different seasons where you start out a little rocky, but then you really get rolling at the right time and here's our opportunity. We have alot of things to address moving forward this week to make sure that our mindset is the right one so that we can finish the way that we want to finish."
On how Saturday's balanced offense was a welcomed sight for the team... "Every single person out there has the ability to be an offensive force, but it's just a matter of having the consistency. I thought that
Hannah Callison had a really good game on Saturday,
Jeorgia Jones getting her first full start and match had a great day for us as a freshman, we need people like that to be spark plugs for us right now and we're looking for that to help us really get going the way we need to."
On what to expect this weekend and how to build on the late game momentum generated last weekend... "We really did play well at the end of the Texas A&M-Kingsville match. I just go back to our mindset, we can't just get up for what are in our minds the big games, we've got to show up for every game. This conference is loaded and you can't ever walk into a game thinking just because you've beaten a team three years in a row that you're not going to get a good game ouf of them. Every game is a big game from here on out and we have to treat each of them that way."
