A THIRD STRAIGHT SWEEP
UT Tyler volleyball held the advantage in every statistical category to roll to their third consecutive Lone Star Conference sweep in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-16) road win last weekend over Oklahoma Christian. The Patriots hit .336 for the match and didn't allow Oklahoma Christian to reach the 20-point mark in any set to extend their set-win streak to 12 straight on Wednesday night. SeniorÂ
Mikayla Ware had 15 kills and classmateÂ
Hannah Callison posted 10 kills to pace a Patriot offense that totaled 46 kills while committing just a combined 10 attacking errors in the match. The win extended the set win streak to 12 straight for the Patriots and precluded a much-needed off weekend from Lone Star Conference play for the squad.
WHAT COACH MASHE IS SAYING
On this week's midweek trip to UAFS... "It is a very important week. We're at the point in our season where it's kind of do-or-die and we have to continue to take care of business on the court. Arkansas-Fort Smith is going to be a great game. They're in the mix fighting for a spot for conference tournament and in watching film on them we've seen that they're scrappy and play really hard."
On the weekend's off days that were awarded to the team... "I think the off week was huge. We've had a brutal schedule and I think that they needed just a break from volleyball for a little bit. I fully expect them to come back to practice even more hungry and have a great week coming out of the break."
On what the team needs to do to take their performance to the next level... "I just think our consistency. I think that's been a big theme the last several weeks, just everyone showing up at the same time. I think it's really important that our girls are playing really well together right now. We have to remember how important that is with the goals that we have set as far as our hitting percentage and defensively. When we're all clicking we see how good of a team we can be."
THE MATCH UP
UAFS enters Wednesday night with a record of 12-12 on the year and 4-7 in LSC play. The Lions sport a 3-3 record on their home floor, but are in the midst of a three match losing streak. Freshman Caelyn Gunn has been the heart of the UAFS offense with an average of 3.58 points per set, and ranks second on the team behind Reagan Macha with 183 kills on the year. UT Tyler has won each of the last two meetings between the two programs by 3-0 sweeps, while UAFS won both of the first two meetings back in 2019.Â
FINDING THEIR FORM
UT Tyler volleyball has been as impressive as any team in the Lone Star Conference over the course of their current four-match winning streak. After dropping the opening set back on Oct. 8th against Texas A&M-Kingsville, the Patriots have now reeled off 12 straight set victories behind what can only be described as total team efforts from start to finish. UT Tyler has out-scored their opposition 244-to-168 over the span of those four victories, and has posted a team hitting percentage of .282 over that span as well. UT Tyler has notched 196 total kills, and is averaging over 15 kills per set over their current winning streak.
Mikayla Ware has averaged 4.77 kills per set while
Hannah Callison,
Maiya Peña,
Dakota Rogers-Hurtado and
Evelyn Torres have all posted hitting percentage north of .300 to create what has been a clicking offense. Libero
Savannah Guzman has elevated her play to an outstanding level as well, averaging 5.31 digs per set while matching a program record 27 digs in a three-set match and eclipsing the 1,500 dig total for her career in the process.
A LOOK AT THE STANDINGS
With two weeks left in the regular season, seeding for the 2022 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Postseason Tournament is far from decided. The Patriots currently sit in a tie for fifth place in the LSC standings with a league record of 8-3 alongside Texas A&M-Kingsville. West Texas A&M remains the lone undefeated team in LSC play, while DBU and Texas A&M International both sit with one loss heading down the stretch. St. Mary's, who the Patriots will welcome this weekend to the HPC, sits a game ahead of the Patriots with a mark of 10-3 in conference play.
