SENDING THE SENIORS OUT ON TOP
UT Tyler returned home over the weekend following a disappointing loss on Wednesday night against UAFS and honored their 2022 senior class in the last home weekend of their careers with a 3-0 win over St. Mary's on Friday night and a 3-1 win over St. Edward's on Saturday afternoon. SeniorÂ
Mikayla Ware posted a double-double with team highs in both kills (16) and digs (14) in the win over St. Mary's, while the Patriot defense limited St. Mary's to a -0.010 team hitting percentage for the night. The negative team hitting percentage for St. Mary's is the second time in 2022 the Patriots have forced their opposition into more attacking errors than kills, thanks in large part to spectacular efforts from the back row of the Patriot defense. LiberoÂ
Savannah Guzman, who climbed into second all-time in the UT Tyler record books with 1,567 digs and counting at the conclusion of the weekend, joined Ware and sophomoreÂ
Addison Evans (11) in double-digit dig totals on the night with 10. The Patriot offense hit .287 with 44 kills on 101 attacks, led by Ware's .333 percentage with 16 kills on 36 swings. SeniorÂ
Hannah Callison started her final weekend on her home floor in style as well with eight kills on 16 swings and just a single attacking error. UT Tyler responded to a 25-20 first set defeat with three straight sets of dominating volleyball in Saturday's win over St. Edward's to sendÂ
Mikayla Ware,Â
Savannah Guzman,Â
Hattie Murray,Â
Hannah Callison andÂ
Kylee Becker out with a home victory in their final action on the court inside the Herrington Patriot Center. Ware totaled 24 kills and 13 digs and joined Guzman and setterÂ
Adeline Ortman as the three Patriots with double-doubles in the match. Ortman paced the Patriots with 26 assists and 15 digs for an outstanding match for the sophomore, while Guzman added 14 digs and 10 assists to complete a stellar career inside the HPC for the senior. UT Tyler hit north of .300 in each of their three set victories, finishing the match with 58 kills in 144 swings for a .250 team hitting percentage.
WHAT COACH MASHE IS SAYING
On the turnaround of her team's play for Senior Weekend... "We did not show up on Wednesday night against Arkansas-Fort Smith. It was a disappointing loss for our team, we just couldn't quite get anything going that night, but I am very proud of the way our team did respond. We had one day to get home, recover and just turn it around mentally and I thought they did just that. We knew that both games against St. Mary's and St. Edward's were going to be tough ones, and they were both must wins. I just thought our team did a great job connecting and responding."
On the 2022 seniors playing some of their best volleyball on Senior Weekend... "I couldn't be more proud of just how they played this weekend. I thought we were a little emotional stepping into the first set against St. Edward's, but again they did a great job of just settling down and figuring out our groove. Once we did we started playing well against St. Edward's. Our seniors all did a great job, they all had different plays throughout the game in which they stepped up, Mikayla had a great weekend and responded after Wednesday night's performance. I'm just proud of them for responding well and representing in their final game inside the HPC."
On the a difficult road trip to end the 2022 regular season... "This week is very important. Ever since that Wednesday loss we have been talking as a team about focusing on going 1-0, and that being our only focus. Each game from here on we have to think of it as one game at a time and really focus on every point and not look too far ahead because we need to finish 1-0 every night from this point forward."
STANDING AT NO. 7
The University of Texas at Tyler volleyball program came in at no. 7 in the second edition of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional rankings as announced by the NCAA on Wednesday afternoon. The second edition of the rankings provided the first version of the regional rankings announced in ranking order after the initial list included the teams listed by alphabetical order. Wednesday's rankings are the second of three editions of the rankings that will be announced by the NCAA selection committee prior to the announcement of the NCAA Division II Volleyball National Tournament field on Sunday, Nov. 13
th via an online selection show. The winners of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) and Lone Star Conference (LSC) Postseason Tournaments will receive the two available automatic qualifying bids into the tournament, while the final six teams of the eight-team South Central Regional Tournament field will be at-large bids determined by the NCAA selection committee. FIGHTING FOR SEEDING
The final week of the 2022 regular season will establish the seeding for next weekend's Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament, hosted by the no. 1 seed. West Texas A&M is one win this weekend away from clinching the top seed in the eight-team field, but the seeding following the Lady Buffs is still up in the air heading into this week's matches. DBU and Texas A&M International both sit 12-2 in LSC play in a tie for second place, while Texas A&M-Kingsville holds a one match advantage over UT Tyler in third place. The Patriots do hold the first tie breaker over the Javelinas, but barring a pair of losses from DBU or Texas A&M International, it seems that UT Tyler and Texas A&M-Kingsville will be meeting each other as the no. 4 and no. 5 seeds in the first round of the tournament.
