SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – UT Tyler volleyball improved to 19-8 on the year and 12-4 in conference play as they closed out the regular season with a dominant 3-0 sweep over Angelo State on Saturday.
The Patriots hit .217 for the game, but held the Rambelles to just .108 in the contest and posted 14 blocks for the match. The Patriots had six aces, three players in double digit assists, and six players in double digit kills to make it a total team effort on the day.
It was a tightly contested first set that saw the Rambelles hold no lead larger than one point and the largest lead of the set was the 25-21 margin that decided the set. After an Angelo State kill that tied the game at 19-19, the Patriots rattled off a 6-2 run that included two kills from
Mikayla Ware, a kill from
Hannah Callison, and aces from Ware and
Jenna White to finally outlast a stingy Rambelles team.
The second set saw Angelo State claw themselves into the set early, going on a 5-2 run to put pressure on UT Tyler early. They responded with a kill from Ware, Callison, Maiya Peña, and a block from Peña and Callison to go right back on top 6-5. Both teams would trade short runs before UT Tyler stretched the lead to 12-9. That was matched from the Rambelles as they scored four unanswered points to retake the lead.
That run was all the Rambelles had in the second set as the Patriots went right back to work with a pair of Ware kills combined with another from Peña and an ace from
Savannah Guzman to run the lead back out to 16-13 for the Patriots. That was as close as the Rambelles got throughout the set as UT Tyler would close out set two at 25-20.
In set three, Angelo State took a 2-1 lead early, and would not lead again for the remainder of the match as the Patriots rattled off a four point run to make it 5-2 behind kills from Ware and
Jeorgia Jones combined with a block from Jones and Peña.
After the lead was down to three again at 11-8, the Patriots closed the set on a 14-2 run that included seven straight points to close out the set at 25-10.
Mikayla Ware had a team-high 16 kills and hit .140 on the day. She was followed by
Hannah Callison who had nine kills.
Jenna White collected a team high 20 assists and was joined by
Adeline Ortman (15) and
Savannah Guzman (10) in double figures.
Addison Evans,
Jenna White, and
Savannah Guzman each had 14 digs to lead the team, and
Adeline Ortman and
Mikayla Ware had 11 and 10, respectively.
Next up for UT Tyler will be a trip to the Lone Star Conference Tournament that is set to begin on Thursday, November 10. The Patriots will hold the number four seed heading into the eight team bracket.
