HENDERSON, NEVADA – Sophomore
Jackson Powers led UT Tyler to a first-round 309 team total on Sunday morning to get play underway in the Las Vegas Desert Classic in Henderson, Nevada.
Powers shot an even-par round of 72 at The Legacy Golf Club to sit in a tie for 23
rd place in what is quite simply one of the best fields in Division II men's golf to this point in the season with eight top-25 ranked teams competing. Host Missouri St. Louis will hold the first-round lead on the leaderboard after a six-under par first round total of 282 to pace a tournament that features three teams ranked within in the top 10 of the Division II men's golf national rankings according to GolfStat.
UT Tyler sits in 17
th place ahead of a pair of in-region foes in no. 46 Colorado-Colorado Springs and Colorado School of Mines. Powers made four birdies in his opening round to combine his even-par 72 total with 77's from both
Jackson Naeger and
Carter Lewis for three of the four counting scores for the Patriots.
Sophomore
Alex Kopenhaver recorded the fourth of those counting scores with an 83, while classmate
Garrett Honeycutt rounded out the squad with a first-round 84.
Naeger and Lewis both sit in a tie for 66
th place, while Kopenhaver sits in a tie for 93
rd and Honeycutt in 95
th place.
Round two of the 54-hole event will get started at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.
