AUSTIN, TEXAS – The UT Tyler pitching staff combined to allow just three hits and a single earned run over 14.0 innings of work in 2-1 and 1-0 victories over St. Edward's on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore
Tatum Goff and freshman
Kaylee Davis combined to allow just three hits in the game one victory, while freshman
Kaylee Davis tossed the first no-hitter of the 2022 season for #1 UT Tyler in the 1-0 game two victory. Davis retired 21 of the 22 batters she faced, allowing just a single base runner to advance via an error in her 7.0 complete innings of work.
The Patriots needed just seven hits at the plate to carve out the one-run victories over a St. Edward's squad that nearly matched the Patriot arms pitch-for-pitch throughout the day.
St. Edward's plated their lone run of the game early in game one on an RBI single up the middle that scored a runner from second. That 1-0 advantage for the Hilltoppers held through three innings of play before a pair of back-to-back innings in which UT Tyler forced a run across with two outs on the board.
The first instance came on a
Bayli Simon walk with the bases loaded after sophomore
Courtney Plocheck hit a one-out single and then stole second.
Michelle Arias and
Lauren Harris drew back-to-back walks following the second out of the inning to advance Plocheck over to third, before the third consecutive walk issued by St. Edward's allowed the tying run to come across.
UT Tyler then quickly got behind with two outs in their next trip to the plate in the fifth, before back-to-back errors by the Hilltoppers allowed
Mak Dominguez to come around and score after an error by the St. Edward's pitcher on a ball that Plocheck put in play.
The 2-1 lead was more than enough, as Goff continued to deal. Goff allowed just one hit over the course of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, a single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Goff tossed 7.0 complete innings and struckout eight while allowing just three hits for the ball game.
Davis capped off the Patriot's best day in the circle in 2022 with a no-hitter in the 1-0 game two victory. The Venus, Texas native used just two strikeouts to accomplish the feat, as she forced 12 flyouts and seven groundouts to retire 21 of the 22 batters she faced.
The offense drew five walks and had three hits in support of Davis, and loaded the bases in the first inning to put immediate pressure on the opposing starter, Cadie Belle Currie, of St. Edward's. The Patriots put across the lone run needed for the win in the top of the third inning on another fielding mistake for the Hilltoppers.
Dominguez put the ball in play that was misplayed by the Hilltoppers and allowed pinch runner
Grace Davis to come around to score from second and make it 1-0 in favor of the Patriots.
Davis sat down the Hilltoppers lineup in order until the bottom of the sixth inning in which the leadoff batter got on base via a Patriot fielding error. Davis grounded out the next three St. Edward's batters to work around her lone baserunner for the contest, and made the single Patriot run in the third inning the only run needed.
The win moves the Patriots overall record to 34-4 on the year and 20-4 in Lone Star Conference play. UT Tyler remains tied with Oklahoma Christian for first place in the league standings after the completion of today's play with that 20-4 mark in league play.
The Patriots are scheduled to meet #19 Oklahoma Christian next Friday, April 22
nd at Suddenlink Field when they return to LSC play following a non-conference midweek doubleheader at Henderson State on Tuesday afternoon.
