SAN ANGELO, TEXAS – #49 UT Tyler women's tennis took multiple matches to three sets but were unable to turn the tide on #25 Angelo State as they took a 7-0 victory over the Patriots.
Leony Deutschmann and
Kanika Sivaraman got things going for #49 UT Tyler with a big 6-3 victory in the #1 doubles slot. That put the Patriots just one win away from claiming the doubles point and starting out with a 1-0 lead.
However, #25 Angelo State bounced back with a 6-2 win over the duo of
Brooklyn Ross and
Chloe Dix in doubles slot #2. In the third and decisive doubles match, the pair of
Chloe Chawner and
Andrea Farris battled closely, but the Rams came away with a 6-4 win to complete a comeback and claim the first point of the match.
Over in singles, plenty of matches were tightly contested as the Patriots looked to mount a comeback. Deutschmann faced off in the #1 singles slot, and through two sets had split her match 1-1 with set scores of 6-7 and 7-6.
Ross also split her first two sets in the #2 singles slot as she battled to scores of 2-6 and 7-5. Joining both of those ladies was
Dnyanada Patil, who split her first two sets as well with scores of 2-6, 7-6.
Unfortunately, as Deutschmann, Ross, and Patil battled closely through two sets, the Rams began to tack on points on the board as they edged closer to victory. In the #4 singles slot, Sivaraman fell by scores of 6-3, 6-2 as the Rams put their second point on the board.
In the #5 singles position, Chawner dropped the first set 6-2 before putting on a comeback as she tried to extend her match. Ultimately it would be #25 Angelo State who would take the match with a second set score of 6-4.
In the final singles match of the day, Dix faced off as she looked to hold off the Rams and keep the Patriots alive. After a close first set of 6-4, Ramitha Irrinki put away Dix with a 6-1 second set to close out the match in favor of #25 Angelo State.
Deutschmann battled tightly in the final set, but ultimately fell 10-7 in the tiebreaker. As for Ross in the #2 slot, she would fall by a score of 10-5 in her tiebreaker. In the #4 slot, Patil dropped her third set tiebreaker by a score of 10-4.
Next up for #49 UT Tyler will be a chance to bounce back as they take on Texas A&M-Kingsville. That match will take place on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Kingsville, Texas. That match will also serve as the final road contest of the year for the Patriots before they return home for their LSC finale against St. Mary's on April 23.
