UT Tyler Men's Golf Finishes Under Par at DBU Men's Classic

UT Tyler shot a final round 289 to finish the event one-under par as a team for the three rounds at Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch

DENTON, TEXAS – The UT Tyler men's golf team posted a final round 289 to finish the DBU Men's Classic one-under par as a team for the three rounds and in seventh place on the leaderboard.

Sophomores Alex Kopenhaver and Carter Lewis both shot rounds of 71 on Tuesday at Wildhorse Golf Club at Robson Ranch to pace the Patriots to what is now five straight team scores of 290 or less dating back to last week's victory at the 2022 King-Alfred Spring Invitational. The 863 (290-284-289) three-round total for UT Tyler finished the squad three strokes back of sixth place West Texas A&M.

Texas A&M-Commerce claimed the team title on Tuesday following a final round 280 to finish 38-under par for the event. The Lions posted rounds of 271-275-280 thanks in large part to individual champion Kittiphong Phaithuncharoensuk, who carded an 18-under par total of 198 (64-68-66).

Kopenhaver's one-under final round placed him within the top 25 of the individual leaderboard alongside freshman Jackson Naeger for the Patriots, who carded a final round 73 on Tuesday. Naeger finished four-under par for the event after rounds of 70-69 in yesterday's first and second rounds, good enough for a tie for 14th place on the leaderboard.

Kopenhaver slid up four spots after his 71 on Tuesday into a tie for 22nd place with a three-round total of 215 (73-71-71).

Sophomores Carter Lewis and Jackson Powers both completed the event in a tie for 34th place on the individual leaderboard with totals of 218 for the three rounds. Lewis went 74-73 in rounds one and two, and then closed out the week with the aforementioned 71 in Tuesday's final round. Powers stayed steady with rounds of 73-71-74.

Sophomore Garrett Honeycutt rounded out the counting team for the Patriots with rounds of 74-79-78 for a 231 total and a tie for 61st place finish. Freshman Ryan Willis competed as an individual competitor for UT Tyler and had the best performance of his career, finishing in a tie for 17th place with rounds of 71-70-72.

All focus will now shift to the 2022 Lone Star Conference Men's Golf Championships slated for April 18-20 at Squaw valley Golf Course. The Patriots finished in a tie for 10th place in their inaugural appearance in the event last spring with rounds of 299-311-297 at Tierra Verde Golf Club.
