SURVIVING THE GAUNTLET
UT Tyler volleyball went 1-3 on the opening weekend of the 2022 season, sweeping Colorado Christian in their opening match of the season by a 3-0 final before falling by the same result in three consecutive matches to Colorado Mesa, Northern State and #11 Colorado School of Mines. One would be hard-pressed to find a tougher slate of opening weekend matches across the Division II volleyball landscape then what the Patriots faced at the Oredigger Classic in Golden, Colo. All three losses came via teams associated with the first regular season AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.Â
WHAT COACH MASHE IS SAYING
On her team's opening weekend performance: "I thought we played pretty well against Colorado Christian, and then I think we struggled a little bit in the next three games. Our efficiency has to get better and we have to have players step up for us in big moments. We have to not make so many mistakes as a team."
On the positives of the weekend: "We had bright spots, it was just up-and-down from different people.
Mikayla Ware had some good games, but she also had some uncharacteristic errors as well. Then we had
Dakota Rogers-Hurtado, someone who didn't play a lot for us last year have some really great swings and some great energy for our team. We just have to have more, that's one thing we have historically been really great at is having so many options that we can run and put balls away, so we have to get everybody on the same page this weekend."
On what she expects at the OBU Fall Tournament: "We're going to face some great competition this weekend again and so I think our back's are against the wall a little bit, and we need to turn it around. This week during practice we're going to work alot on handling pressure better as a team and just building that trust and that's what I feel like we need to really get going this weekend."
THE MATCH-UPS
UT Tyler will have familiarity with just one of the four opponents slated for this weekend's matches, as they will meet Arkansas Tech, Union and Newman all for the first time in program history. UT Tyler and Texas A&M-Kingsville will meet for the third time in the final match of the weekend, and will settle a 1-1 tie all-time between the two Lone Star Conference foes, albeit in a match marked as non-conference competition. UT Tyler defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville for the first time last season by a 3-0 final tally after losing to the Javelinas in the inaugural meeting between the two programs back in 2019 by a 3-2 final.
COACH MASHE
Head coachÂ
Lyndsay Mashe began year number seven of her tenure last weekend as the program's all-time winningest coach with 109 wins as head coach of the Patriots. Mashe is 109-43 (.729) as the leader of the Patriots, including a 25-8 mark over the last three seasons. The 2021 Spring Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year is now 301-165 (.651) as a collegiate head coach after six seasons at UT Tyler and 10 seasons at East Texas Baptist.Â
STILL IN THE NATIONAL POLL TALKS
UT Tyler received 25 votes in the first regular season edition of the 2022 AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll after coming in at no. 19 in the preseason edition of the poll. The Patriots were the only representative of the Lone Star Conference to appear in the receiving votes category, while West Texas A&M (no. 12) and Angelo State (no. 16) stood as the lone two ranked conference representatives. UT Tyler has received votes in every edition of the national poll dating back to the first week of the 2021 season.Â
RETURNING ALL-AMERICAN
Senior
Mikayla Ware began her 2022 campaign last weekend after joining
Christina Escamilla as the first two All-American recipients in the history of the program as 2021 AVCA Division II Honorable Mention All-Americans. Ware led UT Tyler with 48 kills over the four matches at the Oredigger Classic, and averaged the fourth best kills per set average in the LSC with 4.00 after the opening weekend of volleyball across the league.Â
A WEALTH OF PRODUCTION
Ware is not the only standout from the 2021 season that returned to the floor for UT Tyler in Golden, Colo. as 2021 All-Lone Star Conference selectionsÂ
Savannah Guzman,Â
Hannah Callison andÂ
Maiya Peña all made their season debuts as well. Guzman is now a two-time All-LSC selection, adding the 2021 Second Team selection to an All-Conference nod during 2020's shortened spring season. Callison and Peña both found their names on the all-conference list for the first time in 2021, while 2020 All-LSC selectionÂ
Hattie Murray opted to return for her final season as a Patriot in 2022.
NEW FACES
A total of five Patriots in
Saige Rivera,
Jackie Velzis,
Meredith Bahl,
Brylee Peterson and
Jeorgia Jones all made their UT Tyelr debuts at the Oredigger Classic last weekend. Rivera got the start as a true freshman in one of the four matches she appeared in, and led the Patriots with 78 assists between her 12 sets played.Â
RECORD WATCH
Guzman enters her final season as a Patriot ranked fourth in the program's all-time record books with 1,249 digs and counting. The all-time leader in program history is Megan McCarty, who totaled 1,763 digs in 408 sets from 2005-08. Ware currently holds the program's all-time record with an average of 3.47 kills per set, while Peña's career attacking percentage of .356 ranks as the best mark in program history as well.
