Patriots Record Third Straight Sweep in Lone Star Conference Opener

The UT Tyler volleyball team made it three straight 3-0 sweeps in their LSC opener against Cameron on Friday night in Lawton, Okla.

LAWTON, OKLA. – The University of Texas at Tyler volleyball team opened Lone Star Conference play with a third consecutive sweep in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-11) win over Cameron.

The Patriots stayed on the road for the fourth straight weekend in 2022 in their conference opener on Friday night, and more than doubled the Cameron kill output to cruise to three convincing set wins. UT Tyler has now reeled off six straight wins, the last three of which have come by straight-set wins.

UT Tyler totaled 38 kills while allowing just 15 kills, the least amount of kills the Patriots have surrendered to an opponent since the 2017 season, to an Aggie side that hit just .022 as a team. Senior Mikayla Ware extended her streak of 15 or more kills to five straight matches with 15 kills in just 26 swings.

Ware hit .423 for the match and was joined by junior Evelyn Torres, who had 10 kills, with double-digit kill totals for the night. The Patriots hit .238 for the match with 38 kills in just 101 swings.

Senior Savannah Guzman matched her highest dig total in a three-set match in her career with 23 digs, while Ware reached double-double numbers with 14 digs to add to her 15 kills on the night.

Despite the dominating result, UT Tyler found itself down 10-4 to start out the match in the first set, but answered the deficit by reeling off a string of nine straight points to eventually lead 12-11. The Patriots closed out set one on a 7-2 run to win the set 25-17 and jump ahead in the match.

Another big run, this time a 12-2 outburst, broke set two open coming out of a 6-6 tie. UT Tyler made the most of that run and finished off set two quickly with a 25-16 win.

The string of points came early for the Patriots in what would end up being the third and final set of the match. UT Tyler jumped out to a 10-3 lead and then padded that advantage to a 24-10 lead with eight straight points in the late stages of the set to win 25-11.

Sophomore Adeline Ortman had 29 assists and five digs from the primary setter position, and senior Maiya Peña chipped in five kills to effectively round out the UT Tyler offensive output for the night.

UT Tyler will now head to Canyon, Texas for a rematch of last weekend's 3-0 sweep over #17 West Texas A&M at the LSC Crossover. That match is set for a 2 p.m. start and will pit two of what is presumed as the frontrunners in the LSC against each other in just the second match of the league schedule.
