RETURNING HOME IN STYLE
The UT Tyler volleyball team made their 2022 home opener a pair of matches to remember last weekend, extending their home regular season winning streak to 18 straight matches with 3-0 victories over Eastern New Mexico and Lubbock Christian. The Patriots didn't concede double-digit kill totals in a single set and limited Eastern New Mexico to a -.021 team hitting percentage in Friday night's match. UT Tyler handily maintained the kill advantage 34-to-19, and benefitted from 21 hitting errors by the Greyhounds. The Patriots pulled away late in the first and second sets on Saturday afternoon against Lubbock Christian and used their second highest team hitting percentage of the season with a .283 in the match to complete the weekend with a second consecutive 3-0 sweep. Three different Patriots notched double-digit kills totals, including seniorsÂ
Hannah Callison and Maiya Peña, who both posted attack percentages north of .500 for the match. UT Tyler is now 10-5 on the year, and have won nine out of their last 11 matches entering this week's action.
WHAT COACH MASHE IS SAYING
On last weekend's dominance over Eastern New Mexico and Lubbock Christian... "You can't go wrong when you get two sweeps. Overall I thought our team played really well, especially on Friday night against Eastern New Mexico. The energy in the crowd and the ability to be back on our home floor was really fun. Against Lubbock Christian it was a little more back-and-forth, but ultimately we came out with a 3-0 sweep so couldn't be happier with our home debuts."
On the team's improved play in late set situations... "The multiple conversations regarding just finishing, it's something that we were struggling with early on in finishing games after getting up early and then relaxing. There is just no time for that in this conference and playing good teams you have to keep that mentality of finishing the whole entire time. I really think they've just shifted their mindset."
On Wednesday's meeting with DBU... "We better be ready against DBU. They are a really good team that's done a great job recruiting and getting in some new players there this year. We know that we have a tough battle ahead in their gym. Those are some of the games you play for, the ones that you know that you're really going to have to battle it out."
THE MATCH UP
DBU is off to the best start through 15 matches in program history with a 12-3 mark, and have started LSC play alongside UT Tyler with a 3-1 record. The Patriots have been led all season by Baylor transfer AJ Koele, who leads the team and ranks within the top 20 nationally in both kills per set (4.24) and points per set. The Patriots lead the LSC with a .260 hitting percentage for the year and in kills per set with an average of 13.74 per set. DBU has played the same four opposing teams in LSC play as travel partners with UT Tyler, with their lone loss coming at the hands of then-ranked no. 17 West Texas A&M. UT Tyler has won five straight against DBU, and leads the all-time series by a 5-to-3 margin.Â
A LOOK AT THE STANDINGS
Â
FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS
The UT Tyler offense produced it's best cumulative weekends in the matches against Eastern New Mexico and Lubbock Christian, posting team hitting percentages of .244 and .283. The Patriots displayed the much-needed balance that has made the program one of the best offensive units over the past three seasons in Division II volleyball with four different players totaling 10 or more kills between the two matches. Senior
Mikayla Ware once again led the team with 27 kills over the weekend, but had a wealth of support from her offensive comrades in
Hannah Callison (15), Maiya Peña (12) and
Evelyn Torres (10). Peña and Callison were particularly efficient, recording hitting percentages of .444 and .455 for the weekend, respectively.
