THAT'S MORE LIKE IT

The UT Tyler volleyball program returned to it's form established in the Spring of 2021 season and the 2021 season at last weekend's OBU Fall Tournament, finishing the event with a 3-1 record with wins over Arkansas Tech, Newman and Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Patriots posted a .220 team hitting percentage between the four matches and averaged 14.73 kills per set. UT Tyler elevated it's level of play throughout the weekend, culminating in a 3-1 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville in the first match of the year against a Lone Star Conference foe, albeit it in a match marked as a non-conference tilt.

WHAT COACH MASHE IS SAYING

On the improved play from her squad last weekend:
"I felt like we really connected alot better this past weekend and kind of got in a groove. I thought our trust just with each other and the way we fought was alot more like Patriot volleyball."

On the play of All-Tournament performers Mikayla Ware and Evelyn Torres: "Mikayla is a competitor through-and-through and she wants to win. When she brings that fight, fire and what we like to call that "swag" to our team, it makes such a difference in our team. She brought that this weekend and it made such a big difference in her stats and how she played as a whole. Evelyn has had a little bit of an up-and-down start, but she really caught on fire this past weekend. She's such a resilient kid, no matter if I put her in or out of games she comes back out ready when I call on her. She can hit the ball really hard, and Kingsville had no answer for her."

On the challenge of this weekend and the respect for some of the best in the LSC: "Each team's tradition is incredible and what they've done in the Division II spectrum is amazing. Angelo State and West Texas A&M have led the Lone Star Conference for many years so I've always had respect for their program's. They've both put some amazing teams out on the floor year in and year out so we're excited to face them again this weekend."

THE MATCH UPS

This season's inaugural LSC Crossover event will give each team three matches against conference competition marked as non-conference games prior to officially kicking off the LSC schedule next weekend. Each team was placed in an event with three other teams based on the previous year's finish in the conference standings, making for a loaded field this weekend in San Angelo. Angelo State will play the role of hosts after finishing atop the league standings last season.

The Patriots will get the weekend started on Thursday afternoon against a Lubbock Christian squad that sits 4-4 on the year. The Lady Chaps opened the season by going 1-3 at the Seawolf Invitational in Anchorage, Alaska, and then hosted the Chap Classic last weekend. Lubbock Christian went 3-1 in their home event with wins over Southwestern Oklahoma State, Fort Lewis and Colorado-Colorado Springs. UT Tyler has gotten the better of Lubbock Christian in both meetings between the two programs by way of a 3-1 victory.

The traditionally strong Rambelles of Angelo State have started out slow in 2022 on the heels of an 0-4 weekend at the Colorado Premier Challenge. The Rambelles fell to all four of the nationally-ranked foes that they encountered over the weekend, and sit 3-6 on the year. History will be on the Rambelles side for the Friday meeting on their home court against UT Tyler as Angelo State has secured wins in each of the first three meetings between the two LSC powers.

The defending South Central Region Champion Lady Buffs enter the weekend ranked no. 14 in the latest AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll and sit 5-3 on the year. West Texas A&M also competed in the Colorado Premier Challenge last weekend, and knocked off #11 Central Missouri and Regis before falling to #14 Wayne State and #4 MSU Denver. Saturday's match in San Angelo will be a rubber match between the two LSC rivals as the all-time series sits at 2-2 following the Lady Buff's victory in the semifinals of the 2021 South Central Region Tournament over the Patriots.

ALL-TOURNAMENT HONOREES

Mikayla Ware and Evelyn Torres were both named to the OBU Fall Tournament All-Tournament team following their efforts in last weekend's matches. Ware led the team with 73 kills, averaging 4.87 per set while posting an attack percentage of .229. The San Antonio, Texas native posted career high kill totals in both the Union (25) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (24) matches, and notched double-double outputs in three out of the four matches over the course of the weekend. Ware led the team in kills in all four matches and contributed a total of 78.0 points for the weekend. Torres provided a great compliment to Ware on the offensive side of the net for UT Tyler, posting a .239 hitting percentage for the weekend with a total of 37 kills. The Fort Worth, Texas native played her best volleyball of the young season in the Saturday matches against Newman and Texas A&M-Kingsville, recording hitting percentages of .385 and .406 in the two matches. Torres posted 17 kills in the 3-1 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville, putting down those 17 kills on just 32 swings for a .406 hitting percentage for the match.

COACH MASHE

Head coach Lyndsay Mashe is in the midst of her seventh season as the program's all-time winningest coach with 112 wins as head coach of the Patriots. Mashe is 112-44 (.729) as the leader of the Patriots, including a 28-9 mark over the last three seasons. The 2021 Spring Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year is now 304-166 (.651) as a collegiate head coach after six seasons at UT Tyler and 10 seasons at East Texas Baptist.

A WEALTH OF PRODUCTION

UT Tyler volleyball welcomed back 2021 All-Lone Star Conference selections Savannah Guzman, Hannah Callison and Maiya Peña over the course of the first two weekends of play in Division II volleyball. Guzman is now a two-time All-LSC selection, adding the 2021 Second Team selection to an All-Conference nod during 2020's shortened spring season. Callison and Peña both found their names on the all-conference list for the first time in 2021, while 2020 All-LSC selection Hattie Murray opted to return for her final season as a Patriot in 2022.

RECORD WATCH

Guzman moved up to third in the program's all-time record books with 1,315 digs and counting. The all-time leader in program history is Megan McCarty, who totaled 1,763 digs in 408 sets from 2005-08. Ware currently holds the program's all-time record with an average of 3.64 kills per set and has totaled 583 kills in her career.
