Eagles Take Down Patriots with Second Half Run

UT Tyler drops their first game of the season on their home turf as Oklahoma Christian earned a 3-1 win on Wednesday night.

TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler stayed level with Oklahoma Christian through the first 45 minutes, but two second half goals proved to be the difference in the contest.

It took just over six minutes for Oklahoma Christian to strike first as they put the early pressure on the Patriots back line. That goal came after an early save from keeper Luke Ryan, but the second shot on goal for the Eagles found the net.

Both teams would struggle to maintain possession in a physical first half as both sides each took their turns with shots on goal. It wasn't until a shot on goal for Sid Cleofe in the 36th minute that the Patriots seemed to find the spark.

A tough foul drawn right on the sideline in the 38th earned a free kick in a dangerous spot for the Patriots, and Andre Cavichione stepped up to the spot. He lofted in a pass to the back side of the box and found a leaping Brook Williams who himself lobbed a header back to the opposite post. That pass found a running Luis Mahecha who connected on the shot and scored his first goal of 2023 for the Patriots and draw the game level at 1.

In the second half, it was the Patriots who got out early with a shot on goal, but on the ensuing counter attack, Oklahoma Christian found their stride and picked up their second goal of the game in the 50th minute of action.

The Patriots again found themselves facing a one goal deficit, but struggled to find their offensive stride as the Eagles kept the pressure up on their end of the pitch.

As the clock turned over to the 80th minute, the Patriots began to finally piece together an offensive run as they earned two quick corners that both forced tough plays from the Eagles defense.

Shots on goal by both Hugo Marques and Thato Meko could not find the net, and the Eagles would pick up one final goal on another counter attack to earn a final score of 3-1 in their favor.

Luis Mahecha scored his first goal of the season and the second of his Patriots career.

Lukas Paulun, Jordan Toy, Cleofe, Marques, and Meko each picked up a shot on goal in the contest as the two teams each posted seven shots on goal.

UT Tyler gets a quick chance to right the ship as they head to Canyon, Texas to take on RV West Texas A&M on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
