Big Offensive Day Gives Patriots Win over Mustangs

The Patriots got it clicking in all the right ways on offense on their way to a .318 hitting percentage and a big 3-1 win.

WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS – UT Tyler volleyball used double digit kills from three different Patriots to fuel a comeback 3-1 win over Midwestern State on Saturday afternoon.

The Patriots recorded their second highest attack percentage of the season at .318 while recording their third most assists and most aces of the season in the big win.

Set one would belong to the Mustangs after they used a big run to open up the set at 7-2. The Patriots would claw back into it at 11-9, but another big run from the Mustangs lengthened the lead to 17-13. The Patriots would again have an answer, pulling the game back to a 20-20 tie before the Mustangs closed out the set at 25-23.

That first set would be the only set of the match that the Mustangs had more kills than the Patriots, as the offense for UT Tyler found its form in a big way in set two.

The Patriots ran out to a big 5-1 lead early and continued that run to an 8-5 lead. The Mustangs would answer however, and took the lead 12-10 and put the pressure squarely back onto the Patriots.

With the momentum of the set in the balance, the Patriots caught fire as Brylee Peterson, Shaye Koski, Brielle Worley, Adeline Ortman, and Bonnie Hegarty each recorded a kill in a 15-6 run for the Patriots to close out the set and even the match at 1-1.

That offensive spark carried right over into the third set, as the Patriots turned into a full blown wildfire on offense on their way to a 25-8 set victory. In that set, Worley added in seven total kills while Peterson added in four more. As a team, the Patriots hit .593 in the third set alone with 17 total kills and shut down the Mustangs attack with eight total block assists.

The fourth set of the contest proved to be the closest, as the largest lead came at 10-7 in the Patriots favor. Neither side would lead by two points or more until the final point at 25-23 in which UT Tyler claimed the victory. With the tie at 11-11, the match saw 12 different ties and 12 different lead changes until a service error and a Koski kill ended the match.

In that fourth set, the Patriots offensive attack led them to a .410 hitting percentage and 19 total kills. Worley and Peterson each chipped in five kills of their own on their way to double digits for the night.

Peterson had 16 kills on a .483 hitting percentage and had just two errors on the afternoon. Worley had 14 kills on a .462 hitting percentage and also recorded just two errors.

Shaye Koski had 10 total kills and 10.5 points on the night. Bonnie Hegarty had nine kills and hit .474 while picking up three block assists.
