A LOOK BACK

Last week the Patriots played just one contest, a 1-1 draw on their home pitch with Texas A&M International in their final non-conference matchup of the year. In that game, the Dustdevils held the first half advantage, but a free kick goal from Rodrigo Mendes flipped the match back in the Patriots favor as they ground out the draw.

SETTING THE STAGE FOR THE LSC SEASON

All the slates get wiped clean this week as all 10 LSC programs will kick off their conference matches on Wednesday. The Patriots will look to improve upon two solid seasons in their first two years of Division II eligibility.

In 2021, the Patriots went an even 4-4 to earn placement into the LSC tournament in their first season of eligibility, but ultimately fell by a score of 3-1 to St. Mary's. In 2022, the Patriots finished the LSC slate at 2-5-2 to finish just four points outside of the final tournament spot.

PATRIOTS NOTES AND TRENDS

  • UT Tyler sits at 4-1-3 on the year and are riding a seven match unbeaten streak. Their one and only loss this year came back in their season opener on August 31 against then #9 St. Mary's.
  • The Patriots are 2-1-1 against LSC teams this season in non-conference play, matching each of the previous two season's records.
  • Thato Meko and Lukas Paulun have each scored three goals this season, putting them in a tie for 10th in the LSC.
  • Craig Chisholm, Ben Asiaba, and Nori Ito each have two assists this season, putting them in a tie for 9th against LSC foes.
  • Meko is one of just five players across the LSC with two or more game-winning goals, making him tied for third overall.
  • Diego Berlingeri ranks inside the top six in the LSC in four major goalkeeping categories including total saves (18, 2nd), goals against average (.971, 3rd), shutouts per game (.250, 5th), and saves per game (2.25, 6th).
  • In 2023, the Patriots are 3-0 when they score the first goal of the game. Dating back to 2021, the Patriots are 17-1-2 when they score first.

TEXAS A&M INTERNATIONAL NOTES AND TRENDS

  • The Dustdevils have moved to 4-2-2 on the year after the draw with UT Tyler last week.
  • They are averaging 3.63 goals per game while allowing 1.50 goals per game to their opponents. They post an average of 15.3 shots per game while allowing their opponents 8.5 shots per game.
  • Johan Portales is the Dustdevils leading goal scorer with 8, ranking second in the LSC. He is second in shots per game at 3.17, tied for first in total shots on goal, and is tied for first in total assists.
  • Claudio Arias leads the program, and he is in the midst of his 20th season with the team. He holds an all-time record of 216-180-44 and is 163-138-39 with the Dustdevils.
  • Last Wednesday was the first time in Series history that the visiting team earned a result. Previously, the home team won all six iterations with the Patriots leading the series at 4-2.

ST. EDWARD'S NOTES AND TRENDS

  • The Hilltoppers head into this week at 0-5-2 on the year with splits of 0-3-2 at home and 0-2 on the road. Their two ties this season have come against St. Thomas and West Texas A&M.
  • As a team, they are scoring just 0.86 goals per game while allowing 2.43 goals to opposing teams. They average 10.3 shots per game while giving up 11.4.
  • Carlos Huato and Jethro Vourjolo have each scored two goals and are responsible for four of the teams six goals.
  • Hunter Merritt has posted two assists thus far, and is tied for 9th amongst LSC competition.
  • Brian Young leads the Hilltoppers on the sidelines and has been the head coach since 2004. He holds an all-time record of 168-109-34 and has spent each year of his career with St. Edward's.
