WHAT COACH MASHE IS SAYING
On the highlights from last week's 3-1 win over Oklahoma Christian... "Any win you can get at home is a good win. I did think our defense was phenomenal. The stats had five players with double-digit digs, which is impressive. Their effort back there is phenomenal and it's keeping us in those rallies that we maybe weren't winning earlier on in the season. Super proud of that win and how the defense is playing."
On the importance of the regular season matches as it relates to postseason play qualification... "We've definitely been talking about how important these next matches are, but we're also trying to really focus on one game at a time. We've really talked about how big of a week this is for us coming up since the win last Wednesday. Arkansas-Fort Smith is a good team that returned several of the players that they had last year and they play really hard. They're good defensively, great blocking and they've really put up some good offensive numbers. We're going to have to have our offense step up on Wednesday. Then over the weekend going on the road, it's never easy and we know that, and we know that we're going to have to be prepared for both of those teams."
On the presence the middle blocking duo of Maiya Peña and Dakota Rogers-Hurtado bring to the team when they're at their best... "They're both a huge presence at the net. They can both block balls at the net, and not just a little block, but they can get some of those monster blocks that can shut a team down offensively. When they're blocking balls and playing well it brings energy to our side and fires us up. They can also be very good offensive threats for us as well, as long as we're passing the ball well enough to get them the ball. We need them to both continue to be good for the next several weeks for us."
LAST TIME OUT
UT Tyler matched their season high with 12 blocks and did enough offensively late to take down Oklahoma Christian by a 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19) final on Wednesday night. Senior Maiya Peña and junior
Dakota Rogers-Hurtado totaled five blocks each and aided a defensive effort from UT Tyler that forced Oklahoma Christian into 32 hitting errors on the night. The Eagles hit just .082 in the match against a great block and five different Patriots in double-digit dig totals. Freshman
Shaye Koski led the Patriots with 12 kills, while Peña totaled 10 to finish the match with 18 points after the five blocks and four service aces. Libero
Addison Evans led the five Patriots in double-digit dig totals with 22 on the night. The Patriot offense put in their best work late in the match, registering kill totals of 12 and 16 in the third and fourth sets. UT Tyler hit .145 as a team with 46 kills on 172 swings.
PATRIOT NEWS AND NOTES
- UT Tyler has won three straight matches heading into Wednesday night's showdown against UAFS and currently sits seventh in the Lone Star Conference standings. The top eight teams in the final regular season standings will qualify for the 2023 Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championships to be held on Nov. 16-18 at the no. 1 overall seed's host site.
- The Patriots will also continue their push towards a third straight qualification into the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Eight teams will be selected into the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament based on the regional advisory committee's recommendation. Automatic bids will be given to the winners of the Lone Star Conference Volleyball Championships and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, and the six remaining at-large bids to the highest remaining ranked teams in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Rankings. The first of three editions of those rankings will be released tomorrow afternoon. The announcement of the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament field is set for Monday, Nov. 20th via an online selection show.
- Wednesday's match against UAFS will be towards the LSC regular season standings, but also the NCAA South Central Regional Rankings.
