LUBBOCK, TEXAS - #2 UT Tyler scored five runs in the sixth and seventh innings to complete the series sweep over #8 Lubbock Christian with a 7-5 win on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Avery Farr tied the game at 4-4 with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to negate what was once a three-run advantage for Lubbock Christian. Junior
Tara Stewart then put the go-ahead run across a few batters later on a fielder's choice that scored sophomore
Sam Schott.
UT Tyler scored a pair of insurance runs in the seventh after the three-run sixth inning on a heads-up baserunning display as sophomores
Cassidi Mullen and
JT Smith both came around to score on a dropped third strike.
That late rally answered a 3-0 lead for Lubbock Christian after the opening frame. The Lady Chaps finally found an answer to junior
Tatum Goff, and struck for a trio of runs in their first trip to the plate on the afternoon.
Freshman
Taryn Barney drove in pinch-runner
Grace Davis with an RBI single in the top of the second to briefly cut the deficit to just 3-1, before a run in the third for Lubbock Christian extended their advantage back out to three at 4-1. Junior
Michelle Arias got the UT Tyler offensive rally going with in the fifth with an RBI that scored freshman
Berlyn Grossman.
The 4-2 ball game lasted just another half inning before the Farr homer to center that plated junior
Courtney Plocheck knotted the game up at 4-4.
Senior
Shea O'Leary picked up another win in relief duty on Sunday with 4.1 innings tossed, none of which were more important than the bottom of the sixth inning. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for Lubbock Christian immediately following the go-ahead RBI single from Stewart in the top of the frame, but a strikeout swinging for the third out by O'Leary stranded the bases full and kept the 5-4 advantage for UT Tyler in place.
The insurance runs in the top of the seventh proved vital as Lubbock Christian was able to score one more run, the only run conceded by O'Leary, in the seventh to bring the game to it's 7-5 final.
Farr finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Mullen and Barney each added multi-hit efforts for the Patriots. Goff and O'Leary combined to fan nine Lady Chaps on the afternoon.
The win notched a sweep in the Lone Star Conference opener for UT Tyler over the LSC's highest nationally-ranked team outside of the Patriots.
UT Tyler will return home on Tuesday and Wednesday for a three-game series against Cameron beginning at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
