TYLER, TEXAS - #4 UT Tyler began their week of home softball with 3-0 and 5-1 wins against Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday afternoon.
Junior
Tatum Goff carried a no-hitter into the top of the seven in game one before conceding her lone hit of the ballgame to notch a one-hit shutout of the Savage Storm. Solo homers from
Avery Farr and
JT Smith highlighted a 5-1 game two victory to complete the day with a non-conference sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma State.
Goff retired the first nine batters she faced in game one, cruising through the Savage Storm lineup with a 2-0 lead in hand after runs from the Patriot offense in their first two trips to the plate. Sophomore
Cassidi Mullen began the day at the plate for UT Tyler with a one-out double in the first, and scored on a sac fly from senior Caitlin Wells.
Junior
Audrey Escamilla got on base to leadoff the second with a hit by pitch, and then gave way to pinch runner
Grace Davis, who stole second, advanced over to third on a groundout from
Michelle Arias, and then scored on an RBI single from
Amanda Marek.
Goff worked around a leadoff walk in the top of the fourth, and then got another run of offensive support in the bottom of the fifth on a fielding mistake by the Savage Storm that allowed sophomore
JT Smith to come around to score from second with two outs to make it 3-0. Goff retired the opposition in order in the sixth, and then stranded a baserunner at third to record the complete game shutout.
The Rusk, Texas native struckout seven to remain unbeaten on the year with a 10-0 record. Mullen went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Wells and Marek both added an RBI.
UT Tyler took a few innings to settle in at the plate in game two, but negated a run in the third from Southeastern Oklahoma State in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Farr sparked the offense with a solo homer down the leftfield line to tie the game at 1-1 with her fourth homer of the season.
Ensuing singles from
Courtney Plocheck and
Maddie Melton paved the way for freshman
Taryn Barney to step up in a big way with a two-out single up the middle that scored both runners to make it 3-1.
Another solo shot off the bat of Smith made it 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, and an RBI single from Escamilla that scored Mullen for the second time on the day brought the scoring total to it's eventual 5-1 final.
Starter
Kaylee Davis picked up the win after going 5.0 complete innings before giving way to graduate student
Shea O'Leary for the sixth and seventh innings. Davis moved to 3-1 on the year after allowing just a single earned run while striking out four along the way.
O'Leary stranded a runner in the sixth, and then worked around a lone single in the seventh to provide another quality relief outing.
Six Patriots recorded a hit in game two, while Farr and Smith both collected an RBI, and Barney a pair of RBI.
UT Tyler moves to 16-3 on the year with the pair of wins, and will now shift their focus back to Lone Star Conference play in what will be a weekend series between the top two standing teams in the Lone Star Conference. The Patriots will welcome undefeated #22 West Texas A&M, who sits atop the LSC standings with a 6-0 record in LSC play, to Irwin Ballpark over the weekend.
That series is scheduled for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday evening, and a single game at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
