#28/RV Patriots Head Out for Final LSC Road Series Against UT Permian Basin

The Patriots will take on the Falcons in their last regular season LSC road trip of 2023 in a four game set beginning on Friday afternoon.

MIDWEEK MAGIC
 
The Patriots took on #6/#10 Southern Arkansas on Wednesday night in Magnolia, Arkansas, and the Patriots took home a strong 13-9 win. Nine different Patriots hit the mound, each for an inning of work, and all nine backed up a strong offense that continues to put up big numbers throughout the back third of the season.
 
THE OFFENSE HAS TAKEN CHARGE
 
Over their last nine games, the Patriots have put up historic numbers at the plate while winning eight of those games. The Patriots have totaled 131 runs on 121 hits during wins against Eastern New Mexico, Cameron, and #6/#10 Southern Arkansas. Against the Greyhounds, the Patriots had 61 runs on exactly 61 hits. Against Cameron, the Patriots slugged 49 hits and had 57 runs. Finally, against the Muleriders, the Patriots scored 13 runs on 11 hits.
 
NATIONAL ATTENTION
 
In this week's Collegiate Baseball Top 30 poll, the Patriots moved up one spot to #28 and have now been in the poll for three consecutive weeks. In each week, the Patriots have moved up a spot as they continue their rise up the standings.
 
In the NCBWA Top 25 rankings, the Patriots remain in the Receiving Votes category for the third consecutive week as they look to break through into the top 25 for the first time this season.
 
THE LSC STANDINGS


After this weekend's action, UT Tyler is in command of third place in the Lone Star Conference standings at 28-12 in LSC play this year. Angelo State holds on to the top spot at 31-5 on the year, and just behind is St. Edward's at 28-7. The Patriots hold the third spot over West Texas A&M, who is 24-12.
 
The top four teams at the end of the regular season will each host a three game series on the opening weekend of the Lone Star Conference Tournament against the 5-8 seeds.
 
Those 5-8 seeds are currently occupied by Lubbock Christian, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Eastern New Mexico, and St. Mary's.
 
SERIES HISTORY
 
UT Tyler and UT Permian Basin have squared off on seven occasions throughout their series history, and the Patriots hold a 5-2 lead. That series began back on March 26, 2021 with the Patriots taking two of three games in Odessa, Texas. Most recently, the two schools faced off at Irwin Field on March 25-27, 2022, and the Patriots took three of four games overall.
 
THE SCOUTING REPORT
 
The Falcons head into this weekend at 16-22 overall on the season and 14-22 in LSC play. They most recently played one of their two non-conference midweek games of the season and took down Sul Ross State on Tuesday afternoon. In their most recent LSC series last weekend, the Falcons split a series with Cameron in Lawton, Oklahoma.
 
As a team, UT Permian Basin is hitting .303, good enough for eighth in the LSC. They have hit 16 home runs, 72 doubles, scored 266 runs, and are getting on base at a 41.2% rate. Their offense is led by Mason Hamlin, who is hitting .376 with 53 hits, 19 RBI, and has an on-base percentage of .435.
 
For their pitching staff, they have the eighth ranked team ERA at 7.23. They have totaled 295 innings pitched, 293 runs allowed, and have given up 180 walks and have 262 strikeouts. Creede Jeffers leads the pitching staff with an ERA of 5.31 on 40.2 innings pitched, 24 earned runs allowed, and 42 strikeouts to 21 walks.
 
Gabe Grinder leads the Falcons and is in the midst of his first season as head coach of the program. Prior to becoming the UT Permian Basin head coach, Grinder was head coach at Ottawa where he lead the team to a KCAC title.
 
NEXT UP
 
Following this weekend, the Patriots will get a full week off from competition as they get their bye week in LSC play. Their season continues on April 25 against #6/#10 Southern Arkansas as they round out non-conference play for the year. Their final home series will be against UAFS on April 28-30 with April 29 doubling as Senior Day for the program.
