ODESSA, TEXAS – UT Tyler baseball dropped just their second contest of the last 14 games against the Falcons on Friday afternoon as they will look to quickly rebound in Saturday's doubleheader.
The two teams squared off in a pitcher's duel over the first two innings as starter
Dylan Blomquist posted a pair of strikeouts and allowed just two hits in the first two frames.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Falcons would get on the board first. After a single and then a fielder's choice combined with an error, the Falcons dropped in a single to drive home their first run. A walk loaded the bases, and a double would clear the bases for three more big runs. A flyout brought on the second out of the inning, and another throwing error would allow the fifth run of the inning to come around and score.
After a 1-2-3 fourth inning in a big spot from Blomquist, the Patriots posted their first run of the game in the fifth inning as
Lane Hutchinson reached on an error and both
Adrian Minjares and
Nathan Carriere reached on singles, with Carriere's driving home the run.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Falcons would strike back, as the first three batters reached on a walk and a pair of singles, with the second of the two singles driving home a run. A sacrifice bunt would squeeze home another run, and two batters later a triple to right field plated another pair of runs.
That final pair of runs would force Blomquist from the game, and
Bryson Adair would come on to pitch. He would allow an RBI single to his first batter, but got a clutch groundout double play to end the inning.
Now trailing 10-1, the Patriots bounced back in the sixth as
Jordan Gochenour led off the inning with a single and
Kaston Mason doubled to left center to put a pair of runners in scoring position.
Ethan Bedgood would groundout to shortstop to score a run, and the Patriots made it 10-2.
One more run would cross the plate in the sixth for the Falconsas they ran their lead back out to nine runs. The Patriots would need big offense in the seventh, and they got it behind a big four run inning.
Edward Ortiz drove in the first run of the inning on a fielder's choice, and after a pair of walks, would later score on a wild pitch. In stepped Bedgood, and he singled to right field for a pair of RBI's to cut the lead down to 11-6.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Falcons would yet again have an answer, as they posted three runs against
Hayden Collins and
Nick Oslovar to make it 14-6.
After a scoreless eighth inning for both teams, the Patriots faced their last hope in the ninth inning. Ortiz led off with a single, and quickly scored as Gochenour ripped a double to right center. Mason would draw a walk, but the Patriots rally stalled and the Falcons would close out the game at 14-7.
Dylan Blomquist took just his first loss of the year in the game after going 4.1 innings.
Both
Adrian Minjares and
Jordan Gochenour would each have a pair of hits and
Ethan Bedgood would post a team-high three RBI.
