Mason’s Huge Day Leads Patriots Over Falcons

The Patriots closed out a series win over UT Permian Basin as they continue to hold onto third place in the LSC standings.

Box Score ODESSA, TEXAS – #28/RV UT Tyler Baseball used strong offense for the third consecutive game to take a third straight win and move to a dominant 31-13 in LSC play and 32-13 overall.

In the top of the first inning, the Patriots would take the lead first for the third consecutive game as Kaston Mason wasted no time drilling a home run to right field to give UT Tyler a 1-0 lead.

Starter Nolan Cox would give up a pair of singles in the bottom half of the inning, but both runners would be thrown out trying to steal as Blake LaBuda showed off his arm from behind the plate. Both of those caught stealing would be sandwiched around a strikeout in a scoreless home half.

Cox would post a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the second and third and added in a pickoff of a runner to continue his strong efforts on the mound as the Patriots held on to their 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Patriots would tack on another run as Nathan Carriere was hit by a pitch and stole both second and third base to put himself in position with one out. He would trot home on a LaBuda double to left field to double the lead to 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Falcons would finally get their bats going against Cox. A walk and a double put a pair of runners on, and a sacrifice fly and a single would plate them both. A single put runners on the corners, and Logan Henderson came on in relief of Cox. He would allow a run to score on an RBI, and then a double plated the final run of the inning as the Falcons took a 4-2 lead over the Patriots.

Ethan Bedgood would post a sacrifice fly that scored Mason as he led off the inning with a triple. However, the Falcons had an answer in the home half with another RBI double to make it a 5-3 game through five innings.

Hayden Clearman and Edwart Ortiz reached base on a walk and a single to put a pair of runners on with one out in the sixth. Jordan Gochenour would follow by reaching on an error to load the bases, and Mason slugged his second triple of the game to bring home three huge runs and give the Patriots the lead. Bedgood would bring him home with a sacrifice fly, and the Patriots rolled out to a 7-5 lead.

Julio Garcia, who took over for Henderson at the end of the fifth inning, worked a clutch inning as he gave up a hit by pitch and a single, but retired the side with a strikeout and a double play to keep the Patriots lead.

Garcia kept the pedal down with three straight groundouts in the seventh, and he would turn it over to Garrett Arredondo for the eighth. A single and a fielder's choice would put a pair on, and a bunt single loaded the bases. Arredondo got the big double play to only allow one run to score, but an error allowed another run to score and suddenly the game was tied heading to the ninth.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Patriots offense went to work immediately to pick up their closer, as Carson Cox ripped a triple into the right center field gap to score Nathan Carriere. A walk and a hit by pitch would load the bases with two outs, and Mason came up clutch with his third triple of the game that cleared the bases and ran the lead out to 11-7 with just three outs remaining.

In that bottom of the ninth, Arredondo would get a leadoff flyout before allowing a pair of singles. He dug right back in and got a clutch flyout to center field, and then capped off the game with a bigtime strikeout to complete the 11-7 win for the Patriots.

Garrett Arredondo picks up his fourth win of the season after pitching the final two innings and working a scoreless ninth. Logan Henderson and Julio Garcia combined for 3.2 innings pitched with just one run and three hits allowed while striking out three.

Four Patriots collected multiple hits on the day, but nobody led the offense quite like Kaston Mason. Mason went 4-for-6 with all four of his hits going for extra bases. Mason had a solo home run and three triples while driving in seven runs and scoring three himself.

The Patriots will now get a weekend off from action as they get their bye week right at the tail end of the year. They will next take the field on April 25th at 4 p.m. against #6/#11 Southern Arkansas inside Irwin Field.
