TYLER, TEXAS - #3 UT Tyler scored nine runs in their final two trips to the plate to make it 20-straight wins with a 10-1 run-rule of Western New Mexico on Sunday afternoon.
UT Tyler scored an early run in the first and then capped off an eighth straight Lone Star Conference series sweep with nine runs in the third and fourth innings to post a second straight run-rule of Western New Mexico. Junior
Tatum Goff picked up win no. 28 on the year, tops in Division II softball, and supported an offense that collected eight hits on the afternoon.
Four different Patriots drove in two runs, including
Michelle Arias, who went 2-for-2 in the game with two RBI and two runs scored.
Arias plated the opening two runs with RBI singles in the first and third inning, and then scored as part of a six-run third inning. The Patriots once again benefited from a handful of free bases in that third inning after scoring 15 in yesterday's bottom half of the frame in game two.
Avery Farr and
Amanda Marek notched RBI following the Arias single on a hit by pitch and walk with the bases loaded to make it 4-0 in favor of UT Tyler. Sophomore
Cassidi Mullen then drove in two more runs in the ensuing at-bat with a two-RBI single through the leftside that made it 6-0.
Two more walks, the latter of which from
Sam Schott that scored the sixth run of the frame, extended the advantage to 7-0.
Goff worked around singles in the first inning and then retired nine straight batters before a solo homer from the Mustangs in the top of the fourth put the lone run of the series across for Western New Mexico. The momentum continued in the bottom of the fourth for the Patriots as a two-RBI double to left center from
Keely Castillo made it 9-1. Marek then put across the 10th run of the game a few batters later with an RBI single, her second RBI of the game.
Graduate student
Shea O'Leary worked around a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth by retiring the next three batters she faced to keep the Patriot's perfect on the year at their home ballpark at 20-0.
Mullen joined Arias with a multi-hit day, finishing her afternoon 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
UT Tyler moves to 43-4 on the year, and 31-2 in Lone Star Conference play. The 20-straight wins to date is the longest active winning streak in all of Division II softball.
The Patriots will travel to Austin, Texas next weekend for a series against St. Edward's.
