LAST WEEKEND'S RUN
In the opening round best of three series, the Patriots played host to Texas A&M-Kingsville in a rematch of the 2022 LSC Tournament Opening Round. UT Tyler had it all working in both games of the weekend, as they pulled out a pair of run-rule victories
In game one, it was all about the offense as they scored 15 runs on 16 hits for the game and took a 15-5 win. In game two, the Patriots got it going behind
Miles Clack who posted six innings of shutout baseball on the mound and allowed the offense to take over with a 10-0 win.
MOVING UP THE RANKINGS
The Patriots with their 2-0 sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville moved their way up to #24 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Top 30. This is the sixth consecutive week that the Patriots have been ranked in the poll, reaching as high as #24 in the rankings.
In the latest NCBWA South Central Region Rankings, the Patriots are ranked #4 for the second consecutive week as the entirety of the top 10 did not change from last week.
GETTING STATISTICAL
Leading the charge this season has been the offense that UT Tyler has put together, now ranking third nationally in batting average at .352 as a team. The team is seventh in doubles, fifth in hits, sixth in on-base percentage, fourth in total runs, fourth in scoring, and seventh in slugging percentage.
Their pitching staff has also been strong in big moments, as they rank fourth nationally in double plays and eighth in double plays per game. The Patriots rank 47
th in strikeouts per nine innings, and 82
nd in strikeout to walk ratio amongst all Division II programs.
REGIONAL RANKINGS
In the latest NCAA South Central Regional Rankings, the Patriots sit at #4 and would be in position to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the Division II era.
The top six teams in those NCAA Rankings will make the South Central Region Tournament, with the tournament being split into two sites with the #1 and #2 ranked teams each hosting three teams.
The winners of those two tournaments will then meet up in the NCAA Super Regionals to determine who will move on to the NCAA Division II World Series.
THE SCOUTING REPORT
St. Edward's will move into Thursday's matchup at a record of 38-13 overall and 34-13 in LSC contests. The Hilltoppers earned the #2 seed in the LSC Tournament and took down St. Mary's in their opening round matchup by scores of 12-2 and 8-6.
The Hilltoppers are led by Lance Little on offense, who has started all 51 games this season. Little is hitting .409 for the year with team high's in runs, hits, home runs, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage.
For the pitching staff, it has been Luke Short leading the way, and he has posted a 2.58 ERA over 14 appearances. He has a record of 11-1 over 87.1 innings pitched, and he has struck out 121 hitters and allowed just 25 hits and 25 earned runs.
Bryan Faulds is at the helm of the program, and is in the midst of his second season with the team. Faulds led the team in his first season to the NCAA South Central Region Tournament, where the team fell one game short of the super regionals. Prior to being the head coach, Faulds served as the pitching coach for the program for the previous four seasons.
NEXT UP
The winner of Thursday's matchup will then move on to play the winner of #1 Angelo State and #4 Lubbock Christian at 3 p.m. on Friday. The losers of the two first round games will play at 11 a.m. on Friday for the first elimination game of the tournament.
At 7 p.m. on Friday, the winner of the elimination game and loser of the winner's game will meet up in a second elimination game to determine who will play for the LSC Championship on Saturday at 1 p.m.
