THE 2023 REGULAR SEASON

The Patriots posted a record of 35-15 in the regular season and went 34-14 in their Lone Star Conference contests. Those marks are both the new highest in the Division II era of the program, and it is the most wins overall since winning 40 games back in the 2018 season.

That big run allowed them to claim the #3 overall seed in the LSC Tournament and will allow them to host an opening round matchup against #6 seed Texas A&M-Kingsville.

POSTSEASON BASEBALL AT IRWIN

The Patriots will get the opportunity to host Texas A&M-Kingsville at Irwin Field this weekend and it will mark the first time since 2017 that the Patriots will have postseason baseball at Irwin Field.

It turned out pretty well for the Patriots in 2017, as they went on to claim the ASC Tournament Championship on their home turf after taking down East Texas Baptist in the championship game by a score of 6-1 in 10 innings.

ANOTHER MATCHUP WITH THE JAVELINAS

This weekend will mark the second consecutive season that the Patriots will take on Texas A&M-Kingsville in the opening round of the LSC Tournament. Last season, the Patriots went on the road to face the Javelinas and came away with a 2-1 series win to book their first trip to the second weekend of the LSC Tournament in program history in their first ever attempt.

In last year's series clincher, the Patriots put up nine total runs in the second inning alone to put the game well out of reach. Carson Cox, Tommy van de Sanden, and Ethan Bedgood combined for 10 hits and 10 RBI in the clinching contest.

THE LSC TOURNAMENT

The Lone Star Conference baseball tournament consists of a field of eight teams that compete over two weekends of play. Weekend one sees each of the top four seeds host a best of three series to determine which four teams will advance to the second weekend. That second weekend consists of a four team, double elimination bracket to determine the Lone Star Conference automatic qualifier into the NCAA South Central Regional Tournament.

#1 seed Angelo State hosts #8 Eastern New Mexico, #2 seed St. Edward's hosts #7 St. Mary's, #3 UT Tyler hosts #6 Texas A&M-Kingsville, and #4 Lubbock Christian hosts #5 West Texas A&M in the opening round matchups.

That second weekend will take place at the highest seed remaining's host site, with six total games being played.

THE SCOUTING REPORT

Texas A&M-Kingsville will head into this weekend's series at a record of 26-24 overall and 25-23 in LSC contests. They are an even 13-12 in both home and away games this season.

The two teams squared off back on March 10-12 at Irwin Field and the Patriots took three of the four contests. The Javelinas would only take game one of doubleheader Saturday.

The Patriots and Javelinas have now faced off 14 times in their programs history, all of which within the last three years. The Patriots hold a slim 8-6 advantage in those games, but are 5-2 in games played at Irwin Field.

Leading the Javelinas offense has been Nick Wolff, who is hitting .406 on the season with a 1.234 OPS. He has 22 extra base hits, 52 RBI, and has drawn 19 walks to go with a .479 on base percentage.

For the pitching staff, it has been Kobe Jaramillo leading the way with an ERA of 4.27 in his 12 starts this season. He holds a record of 2-4 over 71.2 innings pitched. He has allowed 34 earned runs, struck out 75, and opponents are hitting .269 off of him.

NEXT UP

The winner of this weekend's series will advance into the second weekend of the LSC Tournament, and their first game will be against the winner of the series between #2 seed St. Edward's and #7 seed St. Mary's.

Looking ahead, the NCAA Selection Show will take place May 14 at 9 p.m. as the Patriots are looking to make their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance at the Division II level.
