TYLER, TEXAS – UT Tyler baseball has advanced themselves into the second weekend of the LSC Postseason Tournament for the second consecutive season in just their second year of Division II eligibility as they took down Texas A&M-Kingsville by a score of 10-0 on Saturday night.
Miles Clack got the ball to begin the Patriots efforts on Saturday, and he retired the first two hitters before giving up a single. That runner was quickly erased as
Adrian Minjares unleashed a strike to second base to catch him stealing and the side was retired.
That big play sparked the Patriots offense, as they collected four runs on four hits in the bottom half of the first to take control at their first opportunity.
Jordan Gochenour led off with a single, and moved to third on a
Kaston Mason double.
Austin Ochoa would plate the first run of the game with an RBI single, and he and Mason both would come around to score as
Carson Cox drilled a triple to left field. On the triple, the relay throw would get away from third base, and Cox dashed his way home to plate the fourth run of the inning.
Clack went right back to work in the second, and got a pair of strikeouts and a flyout to put up another zero. He would allow no hits in the third as he put up another scoreless inning, and got a big double play to erase any threat in the fourth.
Clack's efforts continued into the fifth as he worked around a single with two lineouts and a fielder's choice to continue to keep the Javelinas off the board. In his final inning of work, the Javelinas led off with a double to center field, but Cox would pick up his pitcher with a cannon throw from the wall to third base that got the runner attempting to stretch it into a triple. Clack got a flyout and a groundout to end the inning, and that would also end his night after a dominant performance.
After the big first inning from the Patriots in the first inning, they would threaten in both the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but were unable to post any runs.
That all changed in the sixth inning of the night, as Gochenour reached on his fourth hit of the night and then moved to second on a wild pitch.
Ethan Bedgood drove him home on an RBI single, and then Ochoa and Cox walked and drew a hit by pitch to load the bases. Carriere drove two runners home on a shallow single, and later came around to score on a
Hayden Clearman single to extend the lead to 9-0.
Garrett Arredondo would work a scoreless seventh with a strikeout, flyout, and a groundout, and he turned it back over to the offense for their first attempt at a run rule finish.
In the bottom half of the inning, Gochenour was the catalyst again as he drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Mason would walk behind him, and Bedgood would ultimately bring home Gochenour as he reached on an error that bounced away from third base to bring the 10
th run across the plate.
The Patriots got a huge performance from
Miles Clack, as he went six full innings and allowed just four hits on the night. He issued two walks and struck out two batters as he improved to 7-1 on the season.
At the plate,
Jordan Gochenour had a monster 4-for-4 game with three runs scored as he reached base safely in all five at-bats on the night. Mason, Ochoa, and Carriere would also add in a pair of hits each.
UT Tyler will now head to the second weekend of the LSC tournament and take on St. Edward's. That first game will take place on May 11
th at a time to be determined in San Angelo, Texas.
