TYLER, TEXAS – Shaye Koski and
Brylee Peterson both registered 16 kills for a UT Tyler squad that pushed #3 West Texas A&M in all four sets of a 3-1 loss (25-19, 26-24, 25-18, 30-28).
Both sides made the opposition earn points throughout the afternoon of high-level volleyball between two of the Lone Star Conference's best. West Texas A&M posted a .282 team hitting percentage and UT Tyler a .237 mark in what was an entertaining match from start-to-finish.
Koski and Peterson were two of the four Patriots to reach double-digit kill figures alongside
Kennedy Kays (12) and
Jackie Velzis (10) for a UT Tyler offense that put down 65 kills on 194 swings. Koski notched a fourth consecutive double-double with 10 digs to go alongside her 16 kills, while sophomore
Saige Rivera stepped into a setter role for UT Tyler and went for 29 assists and 10 digs for a double-double of her own.
UT Tyler pushed the defending NCAA Division II National Champions and no. 3 nationally-ranked Lady Buffs to extra points in both the second and fourth sets, nearly managing to force a deciding fifth-set.
West Texas A&M was outstanding defensively throughout the match, winning the dig battle by a 96-to-73 margin. Libero
Addison Evans totaled 28 digs to lead the UT Tyler defensive output.
A pair of freshman provided a boost offensively for UT Tyler in Kays and
Kailey Manes, as they both provided efficient offensive afternoons. Kays went for 12 kills on 37 swings without a hitting error for a .324 hitting percentage, and Manes six kills on 11 swings for a .455 hitting percentage for the match.
UT Tyler will hit the road for next weekend's pair of Lone Star Conference matches at Eastern New Mexico and Lubbock Christian on Friday and Saturday.
