WHAT COACH MASHE IS SAYING

On the Lone Star Conference openers for her team last weekend... "First of all it was amazing to be at the Herrington Patriot Center playing in front of our home crowd. Both Friday and Saturday were electric. Our team is getting better every time we play and we're starting to see progress. Our team went to battle last week in practice and really got after it. Some of the things we were needing to see, like minimizing hitting errors and different things like that, we really saw progress. It's why we competed against West Texas A&M as well as we did. We're starting to minimize the mistakes. At the end of the day to get wins against teams like that we have to be able to score in the pressure moments. I know this team learned from that match."

On the noticeable shift in mentality between last Friday and Saturday's matches... "I think our team is seeing that the minute you get comfortable you start to lack in discipline and energy and then our execution starts to fall off. I think they're seeing that if we will just be steady and compete at a steady level, what a difference that will make with our team. So I think that was a big message for Saturday, We focused on three "E's": Energy, Effort and Execution, and I think we did a great job of focusing on that on Saturday and it made a big difference in our mentality."

On handling a long trip this weekend to Eastern New Mexico and Lubbock Christian... "We'll travel down Thursday. Isabel, our trainer, does an incredible job with recovery and different things that she puts together to keep the girls loose and ready to play on Friday. We've got to be able to battle on the road just like we battle at home. Eastern New Mexico and Lubbock Christian are both going to be very solid teams and we're going to have to play well and be consistent. All of these games matter and we have to have a championship mindset every single time that we play."

LAST TIME OUT

UT Tyler started fast in their Lone Star Conference victory and moved to 1-0 in league play with a 3-1 (25-9, 25-20, 15-25, 25-14) win over Cameron on Friday night inside the Herrington Patriot Center. UT Tyler started Lone Star Conference play with a 15-3 run in the first set and rode that momentum to victory in their first LSC match of the weekend on their home floor. Freshman Shaye Koski went for her third straight double-double with team highs in both kills (15) and digs (24), and Jackie Velzis (12) and Brielle Worley (11) both reached double-digit kill totals for an offense that hit .286 as a team. Setter Jenna White notched a double-double as well, totaling 26 assists on the night and 10 digs. The junior helped manufacture an offense that was potent in both the first and fourth sets, registering team hitting percentages north of .400 in both frames.  Shaye Koski and Brylee Peterson both registered 16 kills for a UT Tyler squad that pushed #3 West Texas A&M in all four sets of a 3-1 loss (25-19, 26-24, 25-18, 30-28) on Saturday afternoon. Both sides made the opposition earn points throughout the afternoon of high-level volleyball between two of the Lone Star Conference's best. West Texas A&M posted a .282 team hitting percentage and UT Tyler a .237 mark in what was an entertaining match from start-to-finish. Koski and Peterson were two of the four Patriots to reach double-digit kill figures alongside Kennedy Kays (12) and Jackie Velzis (10) for a UT Tyler offense that put down 65 kills on 194 swings. Koski notched a fourth consecutive double-double with 10 digs to go alongside her 16 kills, while sophomore Saige Rivera stepped into a setter role for UT Tyler and went for 29 assists and 10 digs for a double-double of her own.

PATRIOT NOTES AND TRENDS

UT Tyler is 61-21 (.750) over the course of the last four seasons (2020-23) and have made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II National Tournament following 20-win seasons in 2021 and 2022.

- Freshman Shaye Koski has registered four straight double-doubles heading into this weekend's matches at Eastern New Mexico and Lubbock Christian. Koski ranks second in the LSC in kills per set (3.87) and third in points per set (4.12).
- Libero Addison Evans has posted 20 or more digs in six out of her last seven outings, including 20 and 28 dig-outputs in last weekend's matches against Cameron and West Texas A&M. She ranks third in the LSC with an average of 5.14 digs per set.
- Graduate student Maiya Peña became the program's all-time leader in career blocks last weekend with 307.0 for her career.
- Sophomores Jackie Velzis and Brielle Worley have emerged as solid offensive compliments to Koski over the course of the last few matches. Both Patriots have reached double-digit kills total in two out of their last three matches. Classmate Brylee Peterson posted a career high 16 kills on 51 swings in her most recent outing against West Texas A&M.

- UT Tyler is 8-13 against opponents associated with the AVCA National Top 25 Coaches Poll since 2020.
- Head coach Lyndsay Mashe is the all-time leader in career wins as head volleyball coach at UT Tyler with a record of 135-56 (.707). Mashe enters her eighth season as head coach of the Patriots, and 18th season overall as a collegiate head coach having spent 10 seasons on the sidelines of her alma mater East Texas Baptist. Mashe went 198-122 over the course of those 10 years in Marshall, and begins this fall with a career record of 329-178 (.649).
- Junior Adeline Ortman became the eighth Patriot in the history of the program to eclipse the 1,000 assist mark back on Sept. 14th.
- UT Tyler finished 20-10 overall last fall and 12-4 in Lone Star Conference play. UT Tyler earned a second-straight at-large bid into the South Central Regional Tournament in 2022, earning the no. 7 seed in the field. The Patriots were defeated by eventual NCAA Division II National Champions West Texas A&M by a 3-0 final. UT Tyler notched the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory in 2021 as the no. 6 seed in the field, defeating no. 3 seeded Colorado Mesa by a 3-1 final tally. UT Tyler has been selected for the NCAA Division II National Tournament in each of the first two seasons of eligibility for the program.
- UT Tyler features 12 returners and nine newcomers to the 2023 roster this fall. Maiya Peña, Dakota Rogers-Hurtado and Adeline Ortman return as All-LSC selections last season. Peña earned her second All-LSC accolade in 2022 as a Second Team selection following an Honorable Mention nod in 2021. Rogers-Hurtado and Ortman were both selected as 2022 Honorable Mention All-LSC selections.

EASTERN NEW MEXICO AT A GLANCE

- Eastern New Mexico sits 8-7 on the year and began Lone Star Conference play last weekend on the road with a pair of 3-0 losses at the hands of Oklahoma Christian and UAFS.
- The Greyhounds have defensively been one of the best teams in the Lone Star Conference in 2023, limiting opponents to a league-best .120 hitting percentage and totaling the second most blocks per set at 2.33. Eastern New Mexico features a pair of elite blockers in Gracelyn Stubbs (1.24 blocks per set) and Mikaela Garvin (1.06), as well as a libero that leads the LSC with 6.02 digs per set in Getsemani Carrasco.
- Garvin and Stubbs also lead the Greyhounds with 198 and 139 kills, respectively, but the offensive options beyond those two players have been limited. Garvin ranks fifth in the LSC with 3.74 kills per set, but the Eastern New Mexico offense ranks 11th in kills per set (15.92) and 10th in hitting percentage (.199).
- UT Tyler is 3-0 all-time against Eastern New Mexico. The Patriots swept the Greyhounds in each of the last two meetings inside the Herrington Patriot Center by 3-0 finals, and won a 3-2 decision in the inaugural meeting between the programs in Portales back in 2019.

LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN AT A GLANCE

- Lubbock Christian opened 2023 with seven straight wins, but have dropped three out of their last five matches to enter a Friday meeting with DBU at 9-3 on the year. The Lady Chaps opened LSC play with a win over Oklahoma Christian and a loss to UAFS last weekend.
