WHAT COACH MASHE IS SAYING
On returning home for a pair of conference wins to start out the LSC schedule... "It was great to be back home. The crowds were phenomenal. We felt like we had great support on Friday and Saturday and I feel like that makes it easier for our team to perform the way they are capable of. I thought we played well against Oklahoma Christian, hitting one of our best outputs as a team. I thought we got off to a slow start against Cameron, but once we put things together in sets two, three and four we really finished up strong. Great way to start Lone Star Conference play and proud of the team."
On finding ways to pull out wins in sets despite falling behind at times this weekend... "That was something we really talked about all week long following the trip to Kingsville, when being down we still have to handle the pressure well. We worked a lot in pressure scenarios and so that's helped to just make our team understand that if we just calm down and play point for point, that we can come back and win sets against teams. Proud of that mindset that we had last weekend and that we were kind of able to show ourselves that we can fight back in those moments."
On re-matching two teams that previously won 3-2 matches against the Patriots earlier this season... "I think our team is very excited to get to play both of those teams again, especially in our home gym. We have the mindset that this is a great opportunity for our team. We know that moving to 4-0 is going to be a big deal for us moving forward and it's been a big goal of ours to protect our home floor so I fully expect our team to be ready to battle and compete this week."
LAST TIME OUT
UT Tyler answered a tightly-contested opening set loss with three convincing victories to win 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-13) over Cameron on Saturday afternoon. SeniorÂ
Dakota Rogers-Hurtado played a large part in the Patriot's improvement over the course of the match, finishing the afternoon with 19.0 points on 13 kills, six blocks and a service ace. The McKinney, Texas native was one of three Patriots alongsideÂ
Kota Hartman andÂ
Jackie Velzis to finish with 13 kills, whileÂ
Autumn Perry had 12 to construct a balanced offensive effort for UT Tyler. Cameron claimed the opening frame 25-23 and enjoyed the early stages of a second set that started out 7-7, but had no answer for an awakening Patriot offense that closed out the match with .429 hitting percentages in both of the dominant third and fourth set wins. LiberoÂ
Addison Evans led UT Tyler with 24 digs and put across seven of the 15 service aces for the Patriots in the match to help match that offensive output on the defensive side of the net alongside Rogers-Hurtado.
UT Tyler volleyball returned home in style on Friday night to open up Lone Star Conference play with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-22) victory over Oklahoma Christian. The Patriots totaled 15 or more kills in all three sets, hitting .303 as a unit, and featured a trio of heavy hitters inÂ
Autumn Perry,Â
Kota Hartman andÂ
Jackie Velzis on the offensive side of the net. Perry hit .345 on the night with a team-high 13 kills, while Hartman and Velzis each reached double-digit kill totals with 12 and 10 respectively. The return home to the Herrington Patriot Center was exactly what the Patriots needed to start Lone Star Conference play out on the right foot and find fluidity in their offense. SettersÂ
Saige Rivera andÂ
Riley Clinton both played at an elite level running the offense, while liberoÂ
Addison Evans notched a double-double with a team-high 15 digs and 10 assists. UT Tyler out-killed Oklahoma Christian by a 60-to-42 margin on the night, going for 15, 19 and 16 kill totals in each frame.
